Preparation	Advancced Student is well prepared and it is obvious that he/she rehearsed thoroughly.	Proficient Student is well prepared but the presentation requires a few more rehearsals.	Basic Student is not well prepared and would benefit from many more rehearsals.	Below Basic Student is obviously unprepared for the task. No evidence of any practice.
Physical Presence	Advancced Student employs proper posture and gestures, is relaxed and confident, and maintains appropriate audience contact.	Proficient Student employs proper posture and gestures, is relaxed and confident, and maintains appropriate audience contact most of the time or is lacking in one of these elements.	Basic Presentation is lacking in two or more of the criteria.	Below Basic The student slouches, looks uncomfortable and makes no effective contact with the audience at all. Tension and nervousness is obvious.
Clarity and Expression	Advancced The student speaks clearly, distinctly, and with confidence. Recites loudly enough for all to hear throughout the presentation.	Proficient The student speaks clearly and distinctly. The emotion conveyed did not always fit the content, the emphasis wasuneven.	Basic The student speaks clearly but is, at times, indistinct, too quiet. Or the emotion it conveyed often did not fit the content.	Below Basic The student does not speak clearly, mispronounces words and is inaudible to the audience. Spoken in monotone.
Pausing and Pacing	Advancced The student uses pauses and paces effectively to communicate meaning and/or enhance dramatic impact of the speech.	Proficient The students uses some pauses and pacing to communicate meaning and/or enhance dramatic impact of the speech.	Basic Pauses and pacing were not effective in improving meaning and/or dramatic effect. Pauses at ends of lines rather than at punctuation marks. Delivery is awkward.	Below Basic Pauses were not intentionally used. Delivery is either too quick or too slow. Reads words with no logical grouping.
Inflection	Advancced The student uses inflection, appropriate and varied pitch and tone modulation, to emphasize word or phrases of the speech and enhance persuasion.	Proficient The student uses some inflection for emphasis. Some minor lapses in pitch, tone and volume did not fit the content. More vocal emphasis was required.	Basic The student uses very little inflection, or uses it ineffectively. Enhancement of phrases is not acheived.	Below Basic Inflection was not intentionally used. No voice emphasis is noticeable throughout the delivery.
Memorization	Advancced The student has memorized at least 95% without aid and is able to present it without error.	Proficient The student has clearly attempted memorization and has a few struggles, relying on note cards for help.	Basic The student has somewhat some of the speech memorized but makes clear errors.	Below Basic The student reads directly from the paper without looking up at the audience once.
