Argument is not as focused as it needs to be, causing the writer's argument to be somewhat weak; and purpose is not always clear.

Argument is mostly well-focused and purpose is focused.

Argument is well- focused and purpose is clear.

Argument lacks sufficient support from reliable sources; or the support used is not convincing.

Argument has some support from reliable sources but is still weak.

Support is only ample but is still somewhat convincing.

Argument contains abundant and convincing support from reliable sources.

Grammar and mechanical errors severely impede understanding in several areas.

Five or more grammar or mechanical errors; readers' understanding might be somewhat but not severely impeded by errors.

No more than three to four grammar or mechanical errors; readers' understanding is not impeded.

Less than two grammatical and/or mechanical errors; readers' understanding is not impeded.
