Introduction	Excellent 1st paraghraph: includes title of the chapter book, clearly stated main idea including who/what the story is about and the significance of the time period/event.	Good 1st paragraph: includes the book title, author, and a brief description.	Fair - Passing 1st paragraph: Title, minimal description, too much plot.	Poor - Failing No introduction present.
Setting	Excellent Setting is clearly described with the time the story takes place. Detailed description of the main setting using vivid words.	Good Setting, when and where is mentioned with little details.	Fair - Passing Setting is briefly mentioned, either where or when it takes place, but not both.	Poor - Failing No setting present.
Main Characters	Excellent Main characters are clearly named and a brief character description is included for each main character. Personal attributes are described and evidence from the story is used to support. For example, Harriet Tubman can be described as brave because she took great risks helping the slaves navigate throught the underground railroad.	Good Main characters are mentioned with plot elements. Characters physical attributes are described.	Fair - Passing Some characters are named and very little descriptions are included.	Poor - Failing One main character is mentioned with little description provided.
Problem/Conflict/Climax	Excellent Problem / Conflict / Climax is clearly stated and summarized. 3 specific major events are clearly listed and described. Solution to the problem is described concisely.	Good Problem / Conflict / Climax is briefly described with 2 major events not specifically described. Solution is present.	Fair - Passing Problem / Conflict / Climax and Solution are described with minimal details. Difficulty providing information regarding the problem and solution.	Poor - Failing Problem / Conflict / Climax is present, but no describing detail included.
Conclusion / Review	Excellent How the book ends is clearly stated with details. Clear conclusion of the book with details and book review / reader's opinion.	Good Continuation of plot. Somewhat of an ending to the book is present. Book review / reader's opinion is present.	Fair - Passing Either the book ending or the reader's opinion is included.	Poor - Failing A brief conclusion or opion is provided. Not developed into a complete paragraph.
Grammar/Mechanics	Excellent Book report has been edited and the final copy contains 1-2 errors in puntuation, spelling, and grammar.	Good Book report contains 3-4 errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar.	Fair - Passing Book report contains between 5-6 errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar. More effort could have been put into proofreading.	Poor - Failing No attempt. Book report is difficult to read and doesn't appear to be proofread very carefully or not at all.

Oral Presentation This section is worth double the points. Excellent is worth 8, Good is 6, Fair is 5, and Poor is 3.
Project	Excellent Project is well done and demonstrates student's understanding of the story. Presentation is relevant to project choice.	Good Project shows some effort. Student is able to demonstrate how the project relates to the story.	Fair - Passing Project shows minimal effort. Is lacking some parts. Project relates to the story in some way.	Poor - Failing No project is presented.
