Good The response tells about an idea from the book.	Excellent The response shows that the students took extra time, and contains ideas from the book.
Connections Does the student make a text-to- text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connection?	Needs Improvement The student does not make a connection to the book.	Good The student makes one connection to the book.	Excellent The student thinks more about the book, and makes more than one connection to the book.
Organization Does the student's response have a beginning, middle, and end? Does it contain the title and author of the book?	Needs Improvement Student response has a middle, but not a beginning or end. The title and author are not present.	Good Student response has a beginning, middle, and end. Either the title or author are missing.	Excellent Student response has a beginning, middle, and end. The author and title are present.
Language and Conventions	Needs Improvement Student does not use punctuation or uppercase letters in his/her response. Student does not spell word wall words correctly.	Good Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly most of the time. Student spells most word wall words correctly.	Excellent Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly in response. Student spells all word wall words correctly.
