Grading Criteria
	Novice 1 pts	Intermediate 2 pts	Intermediate High 3 pts	Advanced 4 pts
1.Literal Comprehension	Novice Identifies a few key words appropriately within the context of the text. May identify some ideas from the text but they do not represent the main idea(s).	Intermediate -Identifies half of key words appropriately within the context of the text. -Identifies some part of the main idea(s) of the text.	Intermediate High -Identifies majority of key words appropriately within context of the text. -Identifies the key points of the main idea(s) of the text but misses some elements.	Advanced -Identifies all key words appropriately within context of the text. -Identifies the complete main idea(s) of the text.
`2. Critical Analysis	Novice -Answer is irrelevant. -Misunderstood the question.	Intermediate - Question is understood but something missing: - Does not answer question clearly. -Answer is too short to grade understanding.	Intermediate High -Answers all parts of the question fully. - Response is easy to understand and shows effort.	Advanced -Answers all parts of the question fully. - Response is easy to understand and shows effort. -Adds new insight to the topic with a new view, opinion, and/or new thought/question.
3. Comprehension	Novice Response demonstrates little or no understanding	Intermediate Response demonstrates basic understanding of information in text	Intermediate High Response demonstrates adequate understanding	Advanced Response demonstrates clear understanding of information in the text.
4. Communication Skills	Novice Sentences are incomplete or difficult to understand.	Intermediate Some sentences are incomplete and makes message confusing for the reader.	Intermediate High Some sentences can be incomplete, but reader can still understand the message without confusion.	Advanced Thoughts and ideas are clear, and vocabulary is on level.
5. Grammar, mechanics, & spelling	Novice There are NUMEROUS errors in grammar, mechanics, and/or spelling.
