Narrates somewhat inconsistently in time frames. Participates in conversation based on memorized phrases for the presented topic and other basic information.

Demonstrates little control of intermediate level language structures and vocabulary. Accuracy and fluency are limited to very basic sentences, mostly in the present tense.

Quality of engagement and interaction; how one advances the conversation and negotiates meaning when there is a breakdown in communication

Advanced Low

Easily maintains conversation on presented topic and some other topics. Uses communicative devices such as rephrasing and circumlocution.
Intermediate High

Maintains conversation on presented topics and other basic topics. May clarify by restating or paraphrasing.
Intermediate Mid

Responds to direct questioning and requests for information. Functions reactively. May clarify by restating or paraphrasing.

Functions mainly reactively. Relies on restating.
Comprehensibility

How well the speaker is understood by both sympathetic native speakers and those unaccustomed to non-native speakers

Advanced Low

Is understood by native speakers, even those unaccustomed to non-native speakers. May require some restating.
Intermediate High

Is generally understood by native speakers, even those unaccustomed to non-native speakers. Some gaps in communication will be evident.
Intermediate Mid

Is generally understood by those accustomed to non-native speakers.
Intermediate Low

Is generally understood by those accustomed to non-native speakers, although repetition and restatement is required.
