Composition is well planned. Contrast, Balance, Unity, and Repetition is visible.

Student successfully demonstrated a knowledge and application of the principles. The painting successfully displays a strong connection to the principles and is balanced.
Proficient

Student shows that they can apply self-selected elements to their work. Finished painting shows a connection to principles. Space is adequately filled.
Needs Work

Assignment was completed but showed little evidence of concepts understood. The painting doesn't appear balanced and the connection to the elements is unsure.
Poor

Student did not finish the assignment and/or no evidence is visible of concepts understood.
Technique/Skill

A minimum of four techniques are used and incorporated.

Excellent

The artwork shows outstanding application of a minimum four techniques. Clear attention to detail and application.
Proficient

The artwork shows good application and four techniques, with some attention to detail.
Needs Work

The artwork shows some good application of techniques but lacks some attention to detail. Four techniques are not easily identified.
Poor

Application of techniques was not thought out and lacks attention to detail. Four techniques used are not clear.
Color

Chosen color scheme follows either monochromatic or analogous rules. Well mixed colors.

Excellent

Colors work well together and was able to express their ideas and concepts. Audience connects to the ideas being presented to them.
Proficient

The student used colors that worked well together. The painting is a good representation of their ideas/emotion.
Needs Work

Colors worked well in some areas of the work. Little contrast and had to find connection to chosen color scheme.
Poor

Student did not follow a color scheme, no contrast, no connection.
Creativity/ Originality

Student shows high level thinking expressed within the painting.

Excellent

The artwork demonstrates original personal expression and outstanding problem solving skills.
Proficient

The artwork demonstrates some personal expression and logical problem solving skills.
Needs Work

The artwork demonstrates a little amount of personal expression. Limited use of brainstorming skills.
Poor

Personal expression and originality is lacking. Little thought was put into the production of the piece.
Critique

Completed in depth critique and peer feedback.

Excellent

Student submitted higher-level critique response.
Critique reflected project, process, strengths in their work and areas where they could do better.
Student fully participated in the critique giving a good balance of constructive criticism to their peers.
Proficient

Student completed critique and gave feedback.
While their critique was sufficient it didn't reach a real depth in response to their own work.
Good participation in the feedback session.
Needs Work

Critique was brief and or they did not fully complete the critique. Very little introspection was evident in their critique or feedback session.
Poor

Did not complete the critique or participate in the feedback session.
