Scientific content

Paper must include what goes wrong in the disease. Provide enough detail about the protein/pathway/mechanism to show what the correct function should be. Discuss recent developments in understanding the science of the disease (from current literature).

Poor

No obvious connection between disease and the science behind it. Material comes from disease web sites only.
Fair

Some description is provided of the protein/na structure or function. Language is superficial and not of the scientific level appropriate for our course.
Good

Content accurate but comes from outdated or static sources such as textbook.
Excellent

Mechanistic or structural details are provided including useful figures. Current research is presented but without critical analysis of methods or how the work relates to the biochemistry of the disease.
Outstanding

Relevant up-to-date research on the disease-causing gene product is presented with critical analysis of the results or next experiments suggested.
Medical content

Paper must include disease symptoms, incidence, treatment options.

Poor

Minimal information on the medical aspects of the disease.
Fair

History of the disease is presented but not current information.
Good

Information comes from a minimal number of sources (such as disease foundation website). Medical content is out of date.
Excellent

Jargon is used to describe symptoms. A list of symptoms is provided with no explanation or elaboration regarding whether all sufferers have the same symptoms. No treatment options are presented or proposed.
Outstanding

Symptoms are described using lay language or clearly defined medical terms. Treatment options are provided or proposed based on current research on the disease. Incidence including any geographic or racial difference is noted.
Relevance to course

Does the paper address protein structure or function, nucleic acid structure or function, enzyme mechanism, or metabolism?

Poor

The connection to course material is unclear. The disease has a genetic but not biochemical basis. Gene location is noted but not what the gene encodes.
Fair

The disease is identified as being related to a particular gene product but the normal function of this gene product is not described.
Good

Some description of structure or function is presented but key aspects are incorrect or inconsistent with class material.
Excellent

Protein or nucleic acid structure or function is described but not connected to major themes of the course.
Outstanding

Connection is made between nucleic acid sequence, protein/na function, and how the disease symptoms result from structure/function defects.
Writing mechanics

The paper must include appropriate figures and should be carefully written, with at least two primary literature sources discussed.

Poor

Multiple components of a good paper are missing. Writing is of very poor quality. Extraneous material is added to pad the paper.
Fair

Significant number of mis-spelled words or typos. Incomplete sentences. No figures that relate to the disease science.
Good

Numerous run-on sentences or unclear passages. Figures are of poor quality or don't help the reader understand the content.
Excellent

All components are present but there could be improvement in writing clarity or style. Primary sources are cited but not critically discussed. Figures lack legends or citations.
Outstanding

Embedded figures illustrate protein structure (with PDB ID#) or enzyme mechanism (with EC#). Figure legends are clear and helpful. Structures are shown for any relevant drugs. Sources are cited with appropriate format including title. At least two primary sources are discussed in the paper.
