This performance rubric is an evaluative tool for both a teacher assessment and a student self-assessment which reflects scene preparation and performance.

A. Preparation

Students will demonstrate effective use of class and rehearsal time for preparation.

Level 4

Student is ready immediately with no prompts needed. Constantly works hard and stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Only a couple of line mistakes.

Well- rehearsed. Usually works hard and stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Several line mistakes, but off book.
Level 2

Inconsistently works hard and rarely stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Several line mistakes, but off book.
Level 1

Student uses script to get through scene. Student demonstrates little evidence of rehearsal.
B. Voice

Students will demonstrate effective variations of rhythm, speed, volume and pitch.

Student's diction is always clear and audible. Their voice varies in rate, volume, pitch successfully matching the character's personality and emotions.

Student's diction is usually clear and audible. Their voice varies in rate, volume, and pitch to match the character's personality and emotions.

C. Physical Characterization

Students will express ideas and feelings through movement.

Student's body is believable, natural, unique, energetic and reactive. The character's energy has an evident center. Blocking is smooth and thought out.
Level 3

Student's body usually believable, natural, energetic and reactive. The character's energy has an evident center. Blocking is smooth.
Level 2

Student's body inconsistently believable, natural, energetic and reactive. The character's energy has an evident center. Blocking is choppy and stagnant.
Level 1

There is no physical difference between the actor and the character. No blocking.
D. Interpretation

Students will effectively interpret characters using voice and body expressively and creates dramatizations that are believable and reveal character motivation.

Level 4

Student is believable, natural, and unique. Character objectives are clear and thought out. Commits to all strong and active choices. Proper emotional tone used. Little to no character breaks.
Level 3

Student is believable, natural. Character objectives are muddy, but active. Commits to some choices. Proper emotional tone used at times. A few character breaks.
Level 2

Student is inconsistently believable and makes weak choices. The student's objectives are unclear, and inactive. Proper emotional tone at times. Many character breaks.
Level 1

Student is not believable. Makes no effort to commit to a choice. No character created.
E. Audience Participation

Students will demonstrate appropriate audience behavior.

Level 4

Student is polite, positive, and supportive. Claps, laughs at the appropriate time. Causes no distractions.
Level 3

Student is usually polite, positive, and supportive. Claps, laughs at the appropriate time. Makes some comments or distractions during the performance.
Level 2

Student is sometimes polite, positive, and supportive. Claps, laughs at inappropriate times. Makes comments or distracts during the performance.
Level 1

Student causes several rude and inappropriate distractions, and talks during performances.
