Excellent-A
Creates an interest in the essay. The reader want to continue reading. Includes the thesis and has an effective lead-in.
Supporting Paragraphs

Do not focus on the thesis. Do not have a topic sentence. Do not focus on a central point
Fair-D
Do not focus on the thesis or vaguely relate to thesis. May include a central point that is unclear or without support.
Good-C
Focus on the thesis. Contains a central point and has support and/ or evidence for main idea of paragraphs. Each topic sentence is relevent to the thesis.
Above Average-B
Clearly focuses on the thesis. The central point relates to the thesis and there is evidence and /or support for all paragraphs. Each topic sentence is relevent to the thesis.
Excellent-A
All paragraphs contain a central point that focuses on the essay's thesis. All paragraphs have adequate support and/ or evidence. Each topic sentence is relevent to the thesis.
Conclusion

Is merely a re-statement of the thesis or main idea. Does not brind a satisfactory end to the essay.

Refers to the topic or assertion presented in the thesis. Re-states the main points of the essay verbatim. Does not bring a satisfactory end to essay.
Good-C
Refers to the topic and assertion presented in the thesis, summarized the main points of the essay verbatim or otherwise, and ends the essay.
Above Average-B
Refers to the topic and assertion presented in the thesis, summarized the main points of the essay without repetition, and ends the essay.
Excellent-A
Refers to the topic and assertion presented in the thesis, summarized the main points of the essay without repetition, and ends the essay with a satisfying finish.
