DEXA Scan Competency Assessment 
Students will display competency in performing all aspects of a DEXA scan. This includes and is not limited to, adequate recording of patient history, accurate positioning to acquire desired data, precision in the analysis of the data acquired. The student will also show effective communication skills when answering patient per-exam and post exam questions and provider accurate instructions prior to and during the exam and provide excellent patient care to insure ultimate patient satisfaction.

Shows No Competency

Does not use any identifiers to assure correct patient identity. Is not aware of the proper question to ask in regard to the scan , i.e. age, dob, height, fracture history, medication history, indication history. Answers no patient questions and does not explain exam

Uses only one patient identifier to validate patient identity. Has limited knowledge of proper question to ask in reference to the DEXA scan, i.e. age, dob, height, fracture history, medication history, indication history. Can only minimally explain exam and does not present themselves as knowledgeable when answering patient question.
Meets Standards

Uses at least two patient identifiers to correctly identify the patient. Adequately ask the appropriate questions missing less then one or two questions during the intake for the exam, i.e. age, dob, height, fracture history, medication history, indication history. Explains all aspects of the exam and shows knowledge when answering patient questions.
Above Standards

Goes above all standards for identifying the patient. Conducts a through patient history , missing no indication or history questions. Explains the exam in detail and is very knowledgeable in reference to the scan and the indications for the exam. Also is able to answer all patient questions in regard to the scan.

Cannot demonstrate correct positioning for standard DEXA scan and cannot perform alternate exam if indicated. Does not show knowledge of alternate exam indications.

Demonstrates standard positioning of patient that requires adjustment of the measurement field via the computer on both data acquisition sites. Shows limited knowledgeable of all alternate exam indicators and exams.
Meets Standards

Demonstrates standard positioning of patient that requires adjustment of the measurement field via the computer on one or none of the acquisition sites. Is knowledgeable of all indicators for alternate exams and has some knowledge of positioning for most alternate exams
Above Standards

Demonstrates knowledge for all exam positioning, standard and alternate. Is aware of all indications for alternate exams
Analyze Data

Utilizes computer program to analyze acquired data from DEXA scan.

Shows No Competency

Cannot utilize the computer software to analyze acquired data
Below Standards

Has vague knowledge of computer software to analyze data. Needs more then two prompts of assistance to complete analysis of data.
Meets Standards

Can utilize computer software with less then one or two prompts of assistance to analyze the data.
Above Standards

Can perform analysis of the acquired data with no prompts and unassisted from start to finish.
Demonstrate Patient Care

Proficiently supply patient care to the expectations of the patient

Shows No Competency

Does not acknowledge or meet the patient's needs and does not conduct themselves in a professional manner.
Below Standards

Acknowledges the patient's needs but falls short on meeting the patient's needs. Has one or more instances of unprofessional behavior and is ambiguous in their manner toward the patient.
Meets Standards

Acknowledges the patient's needs and meets most of the patient's expectations. Has less then one instance of unprofessional behavior but conducts themselves in a caring manner.
Above Standards

Acknowledges all of the patient's needs and accommodates and exceeds all the patient's expectations. Carries themselves in a professional and caring manner at all times during the exam.
