Identifying Beginning Sounds

Students will be given a set of four colored picture cards. They will then be asked to state the beginning sound associated with each picture card.
Beginning

When given a set of four pictures, the student is not able to correctly state the beginning sound of any pictures.
Emerging

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the beginning sound of 1 or 2 pictures.
Developing

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the beginning sound of 3 pictures.
Mastery

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the beginning sound of all 4 pictures.
Identifying Ending Sounds

Students will be given a set of four colored picture cards. They will then be asked to state the ending sound associated with each picture card.
Beginning

When given a set of four pictures, the student is not able to correctly state the ending sound of any pictures.
Emerging

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the ending sound of 1 or 2 pictures.
Developing

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the ending sound of 3 pictures.
Mastery

When given a set of four pictures, the student is able to correctly state the ending sound of all 4 pictures.
Categorizing Sounds in Words

Students will be asked to listen to a set of four spoken words by the teacher. They will be instructed to find the word that does not belong due to beginning sounds. (i.e. grass, green, gate, big.....the student should choose the word big because it does not begin with a g)
Beginning

When asked to listen to a set of four spoken words the student does not attempt to identify the word that does not belong or understand which letter the words should begin with.
Emerging

When asked to listen to a set of four spoken words the student can state that the words start with the /g/ sound. However, the student is unable to identify the word that does not belong.
Developing

When asked to listen to a set of four spoken words the student can state that the words start with the /g/ sound. Once they listen to the words a second time they are able (with repetition) to identify the word that does not belong.
Mastery

When asked to listen to a set of four spoken words the student can state that the words start with the /g/ sound and identify the word that does not belong.
Substituting Sounds

When asked to substitute a sound in a word, students are able to make new words. For example: Change the /b/ in bat to /c/. (cat)
Beginning

When asked to substitute the /b/ in bat to /c/. The student is not able to answer.
Emerging

When asked to substitute the /b/ in bat to /c/, the student comes up with a completely different word. (i.e. sat)
Developing

When asked to substitue the /b/ in bat to /c/, the student does produce a word that starts with the /c/ sound, however it is not cat.
Mastery

When asked to substitute the /b/ in bat to /c/ the student produces the word cat.
Rhyming Words

When students are asked to look at a set of 8 word cards (which contain the word and a picture), they can find the sets of rhyming words.
Beginning

Students are not able to match any rhyming pairs.
Emerging

Students are able to match 1 or 2 sets of rhyming pairs.
Developing

Students are able to match 3 sets of rhyming pairs.
Mastery

Students are able to match all 4 sets of rhyming pairs.
