Oral exam rubric This rubric is used to grade each question of the oral exam (each question is out of 9 possible points --3 points maximum in each category)

Comprehension Comprehension of text	Unsatisfactory Student has trouble understanding most parts of the novel or answers are incomplete.	Proficient Student understands some parts of the novel and accurately answers some parts of the question related to the novel.	Exemplary Student clearly understands the novel and accurately answers all parts of the question related to the novel.
Analysis Analysis of text	Unsatisfactory Has trouble identifying the dominant elements and literary devices used in the novel.	Proficient Describes some dominant elements and literary devices used by the author, but has difficulty describing how these relate to the meaning or tone of the novel.	Exemplary Insightfully describes several dominant elements and literary devices used by the author and thoughtfully relates how they are used by the author to reinforce the theme, meaning, mood, or tone of the novel.
Interpretation Interpretation of text	Unsatisfactory Student finds it difficult to interpret the meaning or tone of the work.	Proficient Student identifies the literal meaning of the work and/or can relate how the work makes him/her feel personally.	Exemplary Forms a creative hypothesis about the symbolic or metaphorical meaning of the work and is able to support this with evidence from the text.
