Instrument/Hand Position

A

Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility.
B

Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position.
C

Hand and finger position are good but the instrument is not in the correct position to project to the audience.
LP

Some effort is being made to hold the instrument correctly but performance is hindered by poor right or left hand and finger placement.
NE

Instrument is not held in the proper playing position. Right and/or left hand position is incorrect.
Posture

A

Always sits or stands with the head up, shoulders straight, arms at the correct angle, feet on the floor, and back straight and not leaning on the chair, if sitting.
B

Usually sits or stands with the head up, shoulders straight, arms at the correct angle, feet on the floor, and back straight and not leaning on the chair, if sitting.
C

Sometimes sits or stands with the head down, shoulders down and forward, arms lowered but not resting on the body, feet under the chair, and back bent. Sometimes sits with back off the chair.
LP

Sits or stands with with head down, shoulders down and forward, arms resting on body, feet crossed, fully extended or not touching the floor, and back bent. Sits with back against the chair.

Does not attempt, nor make efforts to improve proper posture
Articulation/Tonguing

A

All articulation patterns are performed correctly.
B

Almost all articulation patterns are correct with only an occasional small error.
C

Student usually follows the articulation marked but there are frequent or repeated small errors.

Difficulty with tonguing slurring patterns and/or accents.

No real attempt at articulation is being made.
Pitch Accuracy

A

Pitches are correct and has a quality sound for that instrument.

Mostly correct with a few errors in pitch or rhythm.

Shows a good feel for the notes in the piece but there are frequent or repeated small mistakes
in pitch.
(4-5 mistakes)

Many notes are incorrect
- student seems unfamiliar with the piece.

Tone Quality

A

Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.
B

Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.
C

Fair use of projection and fullness of tone. There may be room for improvement in:
1. posture
2. embouchure or grip
3. breath support
LP

Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure, grip or breath support. Posture may need improvement.
NE

Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure, grip or no breath support. Poor posture may be evident.
Accurate Rhythm

A

Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.
B

Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.
C

Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.
LP

Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
NE

No evidence of steady pulse
Musicality

A

Student consistently plays with appropriate dynamics, phrasing & tempo.
B

Student displays ability to play with correct dynamics, phrasing & tempo with only minor errors.
C

Use of dynamics is narrow and/or playing is inconsistent in tempo or style.
LP

Rarely uses dynamics and/or follows indications of tempo or style.
NE

Student Does not give attention to dynamics, tempo or style indications.
