In-Class Timed Essay 
Objectives: Given a writing prompt in advance, students prewrite and organize for a timed writing piece. Writing demonstrates understanding of including in-text citations to support and elaborate on main points. Structure of a standard four paragraph essay is present.

Paragraph Development

Exceeds Standards

Thorough paragraph development - well-developed for advanced high school/early college (7-8 sentences) - Topic sentence and supporting details present and clear-stays on topic. Citations are present and accurate.
Meets Standards

Paper contains 2 body paragraphs - Paragraphs include examples from the text followed by discussion of their relevance. Examples include correct citations.
Approaches Standards

Paper may not include 2 body paragraphs, but still contains sufficient information to address the prompt - Appropriate paragraph development - support is sound and logical but may lack specificity - Topic sentence and examples present for the most part, but may not be cited correctly.

Paragraph is underdeveloped - Topic Sentence and examples are present but weak in development
Does Not Meet Standards

Underdeveloped or undeveloped paragraphs. Topic sentence and examples not present in one or all of the paragraphs - lacks logic and cohesion as a result
Supporting Details

Exceeds Standards

Supporting details logically support the topic sentence of each paragraph - supporting details refer to examples in the story - no "I think" or "In my opinion" statements.
Meets Standards

Supporting details support the topic sentence of each paragraph - strong attempt made to ensure that supporting details refer to examples in the story - "I think" or "In my opinion" statements may be present and should be removed.
Approaches Standards

Supporting details usually support the Topic Sentence of each paragraph but may lack concrete details in the novel or poem - writer states "I think" or "In my opinion" often
Beginning

Meets Standards

Contains occasional errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar that may be a bit distracting.
Beginning

Contains distracting errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar that make limit the reader's understanding in some sections.
Does Not Meet Standards

Frequent and basic errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar make the writing difficult to understand.
