Time and Effort

4

Class time was used wisely. Much time and effort went into the planning and design of the piece. It is clear the student worked on their concept, refined their ideas, and implemented them with care.
3

Class time was used wisely. Student worked but did not invest beyond basic, off the top of their head ideas... not great thought or additional effort.
2

Class time was not always used wisely, slow to start work, basic, basic, basic.
1

Class time was not used wisely and the student put in no additional effort.
Creativity

4

Student has taken the technique being studied and applied it in a way that is totally his/her own. The student's personality/voice comes through. Details and knowledge of how the clay dries etc. are all taken into consideration as they work.
3

Student has taken the technique being studied and has used source material as a starting place. The student's personality comes through in parts of the pottery.
2

Student has copied something off pintrest or just off the web. There is little evidence of creativity, but the student has done the assignment.
1

Student has not made much attempt to meet the requirements of the assignment. There is a basic coil pot.
Skill and Understanding

4

Student has an understanding of how thick the clay can be for a successful work of art. The student displays an understanding of drying time, refinement of the clay, and it's workability. All parts are scored together and reinforced for strength.
3

The student has layered coils and connected them well. The construction is sound, but no risks are taken which show the depth of understanding of the materials. There are some rough, unrefined areas that were overlooked. The clay is too thick.
2

The coil is basic. It has some rough edges, I see scoring marks throughout the work, and there are some issues with the structure. It may be too thick in areas or overall too heavy.
1

The clay piece does not use the techniques appropriately and is uneven or sloppy.
Presentation / Craftsmanship

4

Glaze or other materials are applied skillfully and in pre-determined areas. The colors selected enhance and compliment the piece, adding to the aesthetic value. The proper amount of glaze has been applied to the work and there is no running onto the shelf. The bottom of the work was clean.
3

The glaze applied shows careful planning and control. All color is applied in appropriate areas. There is no glaze on the bottom of the work.
2

The glaze applied is somewhat organized and controlled, however it does not show an understanding of color, layering or proper handling of the glaze materials.
1

Little, if any glaze has been applied and is sloppy and uncontrolled.
