Slab Building - Rubric for Student

Students create their own unique slab vessel. They will utilize and put to practice the techniques from previous lessons: coil, slab, score, slip and relief. The details should be creative. Craftsmanship is essential.

Creativity and details Design is unique, displays elements that are totally their own. Evidence of detail, pattern or unique applications. If textured, it is with purpose.	Accomplished 4 Student voice is easily seen in the creative process of creating an individual slab vessel lantern. Details enhance the over-all look for the viewer. Voids are created to enhance the vessel.	Skilled 3 Student's design is creative and starts to show student voice. Details and voids are those of adequate skill.	Emerging 2 Student's design is acceptable but lacks some details that would push it to more of a realistic image. Voids are lacking in details and skill.	Poor 1 Student do not have a creative design: lacking physical characteristics.
Craftmanship Form is carefully planned, form is balanced. Edges are smooth, refined. Walls are even thickness. Joining is secure and hidden. All surfaces are smooth, without burrs or wobbles. Voids are	Accomplished 4 Great care has been taken in the finishing of the entire piece: all surfaces are smoothed and necessary slabs in place. Seams are tight, strong and invisible. Voids are rendered with excellent craftsmanship.	Skilled 3 Care has been taken with the finishing of the piece: most edges are smooth and coils are added. A few places could benefit from better craftsmanship to push it to the next level. Voids are rendered with moderate craftsmanship.	Emerging 2 Student piece is acceptable but more care is needed to conceal score marks or applique designs: rough around seams of slab. Over all shape of vessel is lacking care. Voids are rough and lacking in good craftsmanship.	Poor 1 The project was not finished or lacked many of the required elements.
Dimensions and templates Student used exact template for construction of slab vessel. Form uses correct dimensions.	Accomplished 4 Student went well above the expectations for the piece, creating a usable template and/or revising the template until usefulness was established. Student followed a template pattern that fit the desired expectation.	Skilled 3 Student went beyond the minimums, utilizing the template to correct any flaws in the design before attempting.	Emerging 2 Student met minimum standards established but did not go beyond. The template was not fully developed before used.	Poor 1 Student did not use a pre-project template to assess their design quality. The dimensions do not work with minimums established therefore design has questionable use.
Standard of Clay Construction Vessel has the following lantern requirements: sided or round, a base, feet, voids, handle or is removable.	Accomplished 4 Student has demonstrated ease of use of medium: complete control is easily seen by the viewer. ALL requirements are expressed.	Skilled 3 Student has easily demonstrated control and understanding of medium and can use it in a masterful application. Most requirements are expressed.	Emerging 2 Student has demonstrated some understanding and mastery of medium. Few requirements are expressed.	Poor 1 Student is having difficulty demonstrating consistency with medium, more practice is needed. A few requirements are expressed.
Work habits/Attitude Is respectful and open to critiques. Has a great attitude to suggestions for improvement. Is responsible for own work areas, cleans work areas thoroughly.	Accomplished 4 Is respectful and open to positive suggestions. Cleans work areas responsibly and thoroughly.	Skilled 3 Is respectful and somewhat accepts suggestions. Cleans work areas responsibly and thoroughly most of the time.	Emerging 2 Lacks openness of suggestions for improvement. Has difficulty begin on task to clean up.
