Gesture Drawing Sketches-Lines

Exemplary/Advanced

Gesture lines are done in a free and descriptive manner. Gesture lines capture the essential underlying gesture/movement and are very expressive. An action line is evident.
Proficient

Gesture lines are done in a free and descriptive manner. Gesture lines capture the essential underlying gesture/movement, but could have been made more expressive. An action line is evident.
Developing

Gesture lines need to be more fluid in order to fully capture the descriptive details and essential underlying gesture/movement. Gesture lines lack any expressive qualities. No evidence of an action line.
Incomplete

Gesture lines are not utilized. No evidence of an action line.
Gesture Drawing Sketches-Geometry

Exemplary/Advanced

The student applied gestural circles/ovals and other shapes to help express volume.
Proficient

The student applied gestural circles/ovals and other shapes to help express volume. There are some instances, however, where more circles/ovals and other shapes could have been used.
Developing

Overall, little consideration and effort was made to build volume with gestural circles/ovals and shapes. The student relied mostly on contour lines to describe volume.
Incomplete

The student barely, if at all, used gestural circles/ovals and other shapes to express volume. In fact, volume is not really expressed.
Action/Pose & Proportion

Exemplary/Advanced

It’s totally apparent what pose/action the model was in. Proportions are accurate to the model being drawn.
Proficient

The action/pose is mostly clear. Proportions are somewhat accurate, but there may be areas where a closer examination was necessary.
Developing

It’s sort of clear what action/pose the model was positioned in. The general direction of the pose may be there, but is lacking a more careful study of certain curves or angles. Proportions need improvement.
Incomplete

It’s unclear what the action or pose of the model was. It seems as though the student was simply guessing and not really putting adequate attention on really observing. Proportions are way off and need significant improvements.
Use of space

Exemplary/Advanced

Student has made full use of the space and page being used, drawing figures large enough to fit the page but not exceed it. Figures are overlapped and with contrasting colors.
Proficient

Student has made use of some of the space and page being used, drawing figures somewhat large enough to fit the page but not exceed it. Some figures overlap. The student could have made a better attempt to draw larger.
Developing

Student hasn’t drawn the figures too small, but definitely has space to have drawn them larger to make use of the entire page.
Incomplete

Student has repeatedly drawn the figure very small, even after reminders to use all of the space of the page. Some figures may even be squeezed into the corners of the page.
