Tone Quality

Superior

Tone Quality is consistently clear & mature and warm throughout the range of the instrument. Lapses are infrequent and minor in nature.
Excellent

Tone Quality is clear & mature through the normal playing range. Some notes are not as supported as they should be in extreme ranges.

Tone Quality is mostly clear and focused, but sometimes the tone is uncontrolled in the normal playing range & inconsistent in extreme ranges.

The tone is often not clear or focused regardless of the range, detracting from the overall performance. (The tone lacks practice)

There is a lack of understanding of good tone quality. Notes are overblown causing distorted sounds in all ranges and registers. There is a lack of proper air support.

Virtually no errors. Pitch is very accurate. Tuning is excellent throughout the range of the instrument. The student knows the music well.

An occasional isolated error, but most of the time pitch is accurate and secure. Occasional does not distract from the performance.

Some accurate pitches, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors. There are many intonation problems.

There are no accurate pitches performed. The student shows a lack of knowledge of the instrument.
Rhythms, Precision, and Tempo

The tempo is consistent and rhythms are accurately performed
Excellent

The tempo is consistent and rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few duration errors, but these do not detract from the overall performance
Good

The tempo is somewhat erratic. Some rhythms are accurate. Frequent or repeated duration errors. Rhythm problems occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Fair

The tempo is usually erratic and rhythm is seldom accurate, detracting significantly from the overall performance.
Needs Improvement

There is little or no rhythmic accuracy. Little or no attention is paid to the tempo. There is a lack of internal pulse.
Fingering / Articulation

Superior

Student fingers all notes correctly and articulates all notes correctly.
Excellent

Student fingers most notes correctly and performs most of the articulation correctly - only a few errors
Good

Student fingers some notes correctly and occasionally uses the correct articulation.
Fair

Student rarely fingers notes correctly and rarely uses the correct articulation.
