Student rarely participates in class. Only does so when called upon. Student struggles with pair/group discussions.
Sucessful

Student is usually on time or early (one or two tardies) and has not missed more than one class.
Student sometimes asks questions, and participates in pair/group discussions with little prompt.
Exceptional

Student is always on time and regularly attends classes.
Student often asks questions, participates in pair/group discussions without prompt.

Student does not use target language in classroom. Frequently reverts back to L1.

Student sometimes uses the target language in the classroom. Occasionally reverts back to L1 for language support.
Sucessful

Student uses the target language in the classroom frequently and with enthusiasm. There are few errors that usually do not interrupt the content of the message. Student rarely uses L1.
Exceptional

Student always uses target language in the classroom effectively and enthusiastically in conversation. The message is clear and minor errors do not generally interrupt the flow of conversation. Student never reverts to L1.
Journals

How effectively does the student make use of this educational tool?

Unsatisfactory

Student rarely uses their journal. They show no signs of reflection about their stay. Only uses it to complete the assignments.

Student makes occasional use of the journal to complete assignments, and offers some reflections about their stay and/or cultural interactions.

Student makes use of their journal to complete assignments and as an accurate reflection of their thoughts during their stay. Student uses journal to ask questions and communicate with the instructor and conversation partners.

Student actively uses their journal to complete assignments, reflect upon their stay, ask questions of instructor, reflects on conversations with partner, and uses it to personally consolidate their ideas and feelings about their time in the U.S.
