Wash your hands and gather equipment and supplies. Introduce yourself, identify the patient, and explain the procedure to the patient. - Make sure the digital thermometer is in good working order. - Be sure that the patient has not eaten, consumed any hot or cold fluids, smoked, or exercised within the last 20 minutes before measuring the temperature.
Measuring the temperature: - Place the probe cover on the thermometer following manufacturer’s directions. - Place the thermometer under the tongue in the back of the mouth on either side of the frenulum. - Have the patient hold it in place with their lips and tongue.
When the “beep” is heard indicating completion, remove the probe from the patient’s mouth and immediately eject the probe cover into the appropriate biohazard waste container. Read the measurement in the display. Clean and disinfect the equipment as indicated. Provide for safety and comfort for the patient.
