Penetration	Poor filler metal is on top of base metal, or burn through an bottom of base metal. Hole(s) in base metal	Fair shows evidence of no penetration in some of the weld.	Good shows evidence of good penetration in most of the weld.	Excellent Weld bead has sufficient buildup, and no burn trough with consistent weld penetration to standard of flush to 3/32nd as well as below the plate on reinforcement, with out much variance.
Width of Bead	Poor Width of weld bead varies 5/16	Fair Width of bead weld varies 1/4	Good Width of weld bead varies 3/16	Excellent Width of weld bead varies 1/8
Height of bead	Poor Not consistent and very uneven. Lots of Highs and lows.	Fair 2 - 3 sections of weld bead too high or too low.	Good 1 section or of weld bead too high or too low.	Excellent weld bead is with in the standard of flush to 3/32nd above the plate
Apperance	Poor Ripples uneven and rough. Abundance of porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll and other.	Fair Most of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples. Most of the weld has one or all of these items present: Valleys porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll, present.	Good Some of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples. But is consistent and has little to none of the following: Valleys porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll, present	Excellent Weld is smooth and ripples are evenly spaced.
