	Poor 15 pts	Fair 18 pts	Good 20 pts	Excellent 23 pts	Exemplary 25 pts
Grammar/Sentence Fluency	Poor Sentences were not grammatically correct. Sentences were choppy/did not make sense. Student did not attempt to use a variety of sentence structures.	Fair Writing had grammatical errors. Sentences did make sense, but student did not attempt to use a variety of sentence structures.	Good Writing had 1 or less grammatical errors. Sentences made sense and student attempted a variety of sentence structures.	Excellent Writings were grammatically correct. Sentences made sense and student used a variety of sentence structures.	Exemplary Writings were grammatically correct. Sentences made sense and were written creatively. Student used a variety of sentence structures to enhance the writing/readability.
Capitalzation	Poor Student did not capitalize or only capitalized I's and proper nouns in 1 sentence. Capitalization is random.	Fair Student capitalized beginning of sentence, I's and proper nouns in 2 sentences.	Good Student capitalized beginning of sentence, I's and proper nouns in 3 sentences.	Excellent Student capitalized beginning of sentence, I's and proper nouns in 4 sentences.	Exemplary Student capitalized beginning of sentence, I's and proper nouns in 5 sentences.
Punctuation	Poor Student used correct punctuation in one or less sentences.	Fair Student used correct punctuation in 2 sentences.	Good Student used correct punctuation in 3 sentences.	Excellent Student used correct punctuation in 4 sentences.	Exemplary Student used correct punctuation in 5 sentences.
Spelling	Poor Spelling is incorrect and gets in the way of understanding the content.	Fair Spelling errors are frequent and repeated. Student has used a limited vocabulary.	Good Spelling is readable even though words are spelled incorrectly. Student has spelled words phonetically.	Excellent Spelling is generally correctly. Difficult words may be problematic. Student has attempted to use a wide vocabulary.	Exemplary No Spelling Errors. Students used a wide vocabulary throughout.
