Moving Toys - making an Australian Olympic Mascot 
Students are expected to design and make an Australian Olympic mascot toy that moves with the use of a cam. They will also be required to assess their design information and their making processes including effective use of materials, the "Australian(ness) of their toy and their time and work management skills.

Moving mascot is well made using appropriate joining techniques and a range of materials

Box and toy represent both the Olympics and Australia and have met all requirements of the design brief

Procedure is structured and detailed. Includes additional info as well as tools and materials

Incomplete and/or basic use of and limited number of tools and materials

Cam doesn't move correctly or at all, is incomplete, has a poorly made toy or no toy

Box is lacking colour and themed design, may not be turned inside out and shows lack of interest/effort
P - partial - D grade

Used some appropriate tools and a minimal number of materials, needs to focus on joining techniques

Cam moves a small amount and/or gets 'stuck

Basic box with minimal or irrelevant themed pictures, mostly paper cut outs
S - satisfactory - C grade

Mostly used appropriate tools and materials with good joining techniques

Cam moves a reasonable amount without interference

Box is made well and includes 3D decoration
Gd - good - B grade

Used appropriate tools safely and with skill to join various materials

Cam has a good range of smooth movement

Box and toy both made well and are good representations from original designs.

Appraisal/Assessment

Can identify positive aspects of their work and can see areas for improvement. Identifies success and difficulties within the processes. Offers suggestions to fix or improve components

M - minimal - E grade

May be able to find positives and/or negatives in their design and making processes but will struggle to identify reasonable ways for improvement if they were to do it again but may not be able to
P - partial - D grade

Identifies minimal areas for improvement and may be be under or over critical when identifying some improvements. Is disappointed in grade but can understand what they need to do to improve next time
S - satisfactory - C grade

Is happy with final product and can identify areas for improvement as well as positive aspects. Can suggest some areas for improvement in design, techniques in joining and use of materials and in their work ethic (eg Next time i need to stay on task all the time)
Gd - good - B grade

Is very pleased with effort and final product and shows interest in exploring movement options. Can identify positives but may struggle with improvements or fail to identify needs that are necessary. Probably wouldn't change anything or may suggest requirements above their skill level and/or resources I'm unable to access
Ex - excellent - A grade

Makes articulate points about the final product, the physical processes engaged in to meet the needs of the design brief, their skill set and suitability to the task as well as their assessment of the task and design brief itself. Worked safely and consistently and offered advice/suggestions to others and may have helped others if asked
