Macbeth Soliloquy 
Students will perform Macbeth's soliloquy from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Macbeth, memorize it, and deliver it as if he/she were playing the character on stage.

Masterful Performance

Student flawlessly recites the lines of the soliloquy exactly as they appear in the original text. He/she is obviously well-rehearsed.
Excellent Performance

Student recites the lines of the soliloquy as written but stumbles over one or two words. The student recovers and gives a good recitation. Student recites 90% of the soliloquy
Solid Performance

Student stumbles over several words and/or mispronounces words. Not prepared well enough to deliver a smooth recitation. Student recites 85% of the soliloquy
Weak Performance

Student is not well prepared as evidenced by multiple errors in correct recitation & pronunciation. Soliloquy lacks fluidity. Student performs less than 75% of the soliloquy
Attire and Props

Masterful Performance

Student employs gestures and body movement, and assumes the role of the character as if he/she were performing on stage. Use of props adds to the performance. Attire adds to the performance
Excellent Performance

Student employs some gestures and body movement. May attempt to assume the role of the character. Use of props add to the performance. Attire adds to the performance
Solid Performance

Student lacks confidence during the performance Few gestures or body movement are employed. There is little (if any) attempt to assume the role of the character. There is either no use of props or no change in attire.
Weak Performance

Student is frozen in the spot where he/she stands. No gestures or body movement are employed; there is no attempt to assume the role of the character. There is no use of props or change in attire
Pacing and Phrasing

Masterful Performance

Pacing is perfect; student speaks neither too fast nor too slow. Student uses phrasing and pauses strategically to communicate meaning and enhance the dramatic impact of the soliloquy.
Excellent Performance

Student recites soliloquy too quickly although some phrasing and planned pauses are used to communicate meaning or enhance dramatic impact.
Solid Performance

Student spoke very quickly, greatly diminishing the dramatic performance. Phrasing was not used effectively, inhibiting meaning for the audience.
Weak Performance

Student spoke very quickly, making it difficult to understand what was being said. Proper phrasing was not utilized; soliloquy was choppy.
Tone/Volume/Clarity of Expression

Masterful Performance

Student enunciates words clearly, distinctly, and with a tone appropriate to covey the emotional content of the soliloquy. Speaks loudly enough for the entire audience to hear the performance well.
Excellent Performance

Student speaks clearly with some lapses in appropriate vocal volume. The emotion conveyed by student's tone of voice fit the content of the soliloquy for 90% of the performance
Solid Performance

Student speaks indistinctly at times and cannot be heard by the entire audience. Tone does not convey the emotional content of the soliloquy. Student laughed during portions of the recitation.
Weak Performance

Student is inaudible throughout most of the performance. Student did not consider the tone needed to convey the character's emotions; monotone. Student was laughing prior to beginning performance as well as intermittently throughout.
