Student is prepared but the presentation of the monologue requires more rehearsal time.

Student is obviously well prepared as the monologue has been thoroughly rehearsed and well presented.

Student attempts to employ believable posture/gestures. Student "hides" themselves from the audience/no eye contact.

Student employs believable posture and gestures, and somewhat incorporates proper stage directions and body positions

Student employs believable posture and gestures, incorporating proper stage directions and body positions while maintaining character connfidece.
Vocal Clarity/ Expression
Beginning Level
Student does not speak clearly, stumbles over words and cannot be heard well. Little to no inflection (monotone) of voice is heard. Student shows little to no clear emotion.
Developing
Student speaks clearly and distinctly with some minor lapses in volume, pitch, tone, tempo and inflection
Strong
Student speaks clearly and distinctly while utilizing appropriately varied volume, pitch, tone, tempo and inflection. Vocal expression clearly conveyed the intended emotion.
Dramatic Pause/Pace
Beginning Level
Student did not intentionally use this device. Delivery was choppy with no logical clusters. Pace was either too fast or too slow. It was hard for the audience to follow.
Developing
Student uses dramatic pause/pace but struggled somewhat with dramatic effect of the monologue while
minimally engaging the audience.
Strong
Student uses dramatic pause/pace to effectively communicate the meaning and impact of the monologue while successfully engaging the audience.
Characterization
Beginning Level
Student established little or no character as evidenced by the student merely delivering someone else's lines. There was no evidence of Dual-Role (seeing both the actor & character).
Developing
Student clearly prepared and established the character yet the delivery lacked some development or was not kept throughout the monologue.
Strong
Student clearly prepared and established the character. The dimensions and complexities of the character were embraced and delivered.
