SMAW Arc and Puddle Control

Students will demonstrate selecting weld voltage, striking an arc and carrying a weld puddle at least 4" using 7018 1/8" rods.

SMAW Arc Start
	Below Basic 1 pts	Basic 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts	Advanced 4 pts
PPE 100 % Student has all required PPE when in the booth welding.	Below Basic Student has no required PPE on inside the booth. No safety glasses, boots, or jacket were worn.	Basic Student does not have correct gloves, and/or does not have a jacket on while in the booth. Student does not have double eye protection.	Proficient Student has all necessary and appropriate PPE on inside the booth. Student does not have double eye protection (no safety glasses worn under welding hood)	Advanced Student has all necessary and appropriate PPE on inside the booth (Boots, gloves, jacket). Student demonstrates double eye protection by wearing safety glasses under welding helmet.
Welder Setup 100 % Appropriate welding voltage is selected for using 1/8" rods	Below Basic Student cannot select appropriate voltage on welder.	Basic Student is close to appropriate voltage, but has to adjust once weld is started.	Proficient Welder selects the appropriate voltage before striking an arc. Student does not have to change voltage after trying to strike an arc.	Advanced Welder selects the appropriate voltage before striking an arc. Student does not have to change voltage after trying to strike an arc.
Striking an Arc 100 % Arc is struck cleanly without sticking or fusing rod to plate	Below Basic Student fails to get an arc started, wastes a rod due to fusing rod to weld plate	Basic Student strikes an arc, but first fuses the rod to the plate before getting arc started	Proficient Student cleanly strikes an arc without fusing rod to weld plate. Arc is started outside of weld path.	Advanced Student cleanly strikes an arc without sticking rod to plate. Arc is started within weld path.
Puddle Control 100 % A solid weld puddle is created and maintained throughout a 4" weld.	Below Basic Student fails to create a weld puddle. Very inconsistent rod movement, and excessive arc length is demonstrated.	Basic Student creates a weld puddle, but produces inconsistent rod movement.	Proficient Student carries a solid weld puddle, creating a straight weld. Student briefly loses constant arc length, but adjusts appropriately.	Advanced Student carries a solid weld puddle, creating a straight weld, and maintaining consistent arc length over a 4" weld.
