The width of the weld bead over 3/8 to 1/2 in. in most areas throughout.
Weld beads under 1/4 inch in most areas through.
Bad

The width of the weld bead slightly above or below 1/4.
Better

The width of the weld bead mostly 1/4 of an inch but toes of the weld are sloppy and have many inlets or other deficiencies.
Best

The width of weld bead consistent 1/4 of an inch.
Toes are tight and lack other notable deficiencies.
Height of bead

Failed

Not consistent and very uneven.
Lots of Highs and lows.
Indication of lack of surface preparation between beads.
Bad

Some areas show weld bead too high or too low.
Stop and Start show to excessively.
Better

1 section or of weld bead too high or too low.
Best

The weld bead is within the standard of flush to 1/8th in height throughout.
Apperance

Failed

Ripples uneven and rough. An abundance of:
Porosity, Undercut
Under fill, Cold roll
Slag inclusion, not clean,
Welds overrun parameters.
Can't distinguish between welds. Not to standard.
Bad

Most of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples.

Most of the weld has one or all of these items present:
Valleys, porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll, slag present.
Better

Some of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples.
But is consistent and has little to none of the following:
Valleys, porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll, slag present.
Best

Weld is smooth and ripples are evenly spaced.

None of the following are present:

Valleys
porosity, undercut, under fill, cold roll, slag
Instructions/Dimention

Were not adhered to.

Did not follow provided instructions.

The student used the wrong material or welded in the wrong position
