These standards apply to the paragraph at its most basic level--a topic sentence, detail sentences, and a concluding sentence.

	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Topic Sentence	Poor Paragraph has no topic sentence.	Fair Topic sentence is unclear.	Good Topic sentence is somewhat clear, but is not completely coherent.	Excellent Topic sentence is clear and coherent.
Detail Sentences	Poor Paragraph has no supporting detail sentences that relate back to the topic sentence.	Fair Paragraph has one supporting detail sentence that relates back to the topic sentence.	Good Paragraph has two supporting detail sentences that relate back to the topic sentence.	Excellent Paragraph has three or more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the topic sentence.
Concluding Sentence	Poor Paragraph has no concluding sentence that relates back to the topic sentence.	Fair Concluding sentence is unclear or does not relate back to the topic sentence.	Good Concluding sentence is somewhat clear, and relates back to the topic sentence.	Excellent Concluding sentence is clear and coherent. It relates back to the topic sentence.
Legibility	Poor Writing is not legible.	Fair Writing is not legible in some parts.	Good Writing is marginally legible.	Excellent Writing is legible.
Mechanics and Grammar	Poor Paragraph has seven or more punctuation, capitalization, or spelling errors.	Fair Paragraph has four to seven punctuation, capitalization, or spelling errors.	Good Paragraph has one to three punctuation, capitalization, or spelling errors.	Excellent Paragraph has no errors in puctuation, capitalization, or spelling
