Focus is established, however, not maintained throughout paper.	Novice Thesis lacks clarity and/or the topic is ordinary. Focus is confusing and not maintained.	Unsatisfactory Thesis statement is missing or difficult to identify.	Non-Performance Thesis statement is missing or inappropriate to assignment. The paper lacks purpose.
Voice	Exemplary Writing displays a natural style appropriate to the purpose and content. Distinctive and personal voice are varied, fluid and enhance the writing structure. Effective word choices.	Proficient Writing establishes personal expression and effective tone, however, lacks the depth of an "A" grade paper.	Novice Writing scarcely establishes an effective tone. Word choice is overly simple, or limited.	Unsatisfactory Personal expression and tone are not evident. Word choice is simplistic or below level.	Non-Performance Writing appears robotic. Word choices are poor.
