Spelling / Grammar	Needs Work Poem has multiple spelling and grammar mistakes. No effort has been made to proofread	Fair Poem has several errors in grammar and spelling which makes it difficult to understand.	Good Poem has a few errors in spelling and/or grammar. Poem is easily understood.	Excellent Spelling and grammar are virtually error free.
Emotional Content/Purpose	Needs Work Poem does not seem to be written with a purpose other than completing assignment. Poem written without "heart", i.e. does not reach out and inspire reader	Fair Poem has some parts that are written to inspire the reader and make them feel something. Other parts of story lack "heart", i.e. seem just like written statements.	Good Poem creates an emotional response in the reader. "Heart" is apparent throughout poem	Excellent Poem is written to evoke a strong emotional response, whether through a story, feeling, or connection between reader and writer. "Heart" of poem shines through.
Word Choice/Meaning	Needs Work No thought has been given to word choice. This makes the poem difficult to relate to and understand.	Fair Little thought has been given to word choices. Poem would have been more meaningful with a few word substitutions.	Good Poem demonstrates good sensory details and appropriate use of language.	Excellent Poem uses precise language and sensory details that have been carefully chosen.
