Does not use 3 sources compellingly. Addresses the topic, but does not quote adequately.

Rhetoric

Sophisticated, controlled & on targ

Essayist shows awareness of audience by developing a hook, including key introductory materials, making clear and engaging transitions between ideas, coming to some interesting conclusions

Essayist is clear, but less engaging. Perhaps even a bit obvious in his/her arguments. Transitions are very ordinary.

Uses grammar and punctuation and MLA conventions capably, but does not always proofread or use signal phrases consistently.

Poor grammar--errors in usage and agreement, little evidence of MLA conventions.

Lacks citation and quotations. Poor language use that interferes with the ideas.
