Students use observational drawing skills to create thumbnail sketches of a shoe. From these, they selected the most successful composition that made interesting use of negative space. Composition

How the objects are composed in the space provided.

Good

Composition is well planned and the object fits the space provided. There is a thoughtful use of positive and negative space throughout the piece. The negative space was filled with a distinct color scheme in an interesting way.
Fair

The composition shows some thought however there is a disproportionate amount of leftover space in the material provided. Color scheme not well-planned or distinct.
Poor

There is little or no thought in the layout of the design. All objects are heavily weighted in one corner and do not stretch out into the space provided. Lacking negative space colors.
Line quality

The line contains thick and thin lines to imply value and create variety.

Good

The line quality is varied to create an illusion of 3 dimensions. Line are used to map light and dark values.
Fair

The line was similar in weight throughout the work and only hints at a 3 dimensional quality.
Poor

The subject seems flat. Contour lines are missing inside of the outline. Lines are short stiff or sketchy.
Observation & accuracy

The artist observed the objects and used a slow pace to draw the smooth, continuous line to capture the 3-d subject. The drawing reveals what they see and not what they know. There is a strong likeness to the subject.

Good

Their is a continuous, loose, line which clearly reflects the students' observation of the subject. The line is not sketched or stiff. There is a 3-d quality to the drawing.
Fair

There is a good amount of detail and observation however, the student appears to have sketched and mapped out their work instead of letting the eye lead a continuous line. Too much emphasis on perfection. Areas of drawing what they know and not what they see.
Poor

There is little observational detail in the work. The objects are simple and lack contour line quality. The subject appears flat and lacks a 3-d quality. Too muck of drawing what they know and not what they see.
Focus and Conduct

Student was serious, quiet and focused throughout the drawing sessions.

Good

High level of focus.
Fair

Some lack of focus was evident.
Poor

Behavior is distracting, lack of focus. Some silliness.

Good

The student carefully followed each step to achieve the best possible results. Media was applied neatly and effectively.
Fair
