Width of and Height of bead

Uniform width and thickness throughout the entire length of each weld.

Advanced

Bead is uniform width all along the length of each weld. Has a smooth appearance. Width of weld varies >1/16"
Proficient

Bead maintains width and length. Shows some small blemishes along the weld. Width of weld varies 1/16"
Emerging

Not a uniform thickness through out the weld. Thickness goes to extremes. Width of bead varies <1/16"
Beginning

Weld is cut off in places, not uniform along the weld. Shows bare spots. Width of bead varies up to 1/8"
Face and Edge of bead

Convex, free of voids and high spots, shows uniformity throughout the bead. Good fusion, no overlapping or undercutting

Advanced

Has a nice rounded look. Is not overly high, or low. Bead covers a wide area of each weld. Sides and edges are smooth blending into each weld. Undercutting is kept to a minimum, Weld does not float on surface
Proficient

Bead is well rounded, mostly uniform over the length of the weld. Shows some high spots and low spots. Moderately smooth blending. Undercutting and float are present. Strength of the weld is still strong
Emerging

Bead shows many high and low area's. Total lack of uniformity throughout the weld. Float and undercut are very apartent. Weld lacks strength and flow.
Beginning

Weld does not blend into one single bead. Metal is burned through. Weld has no connection to metal. Not consistent and very uneven.
Apperance

Smooth with uniform dense ripples, doesn’t show the bead traveling to fast or slow

Advanced

Weld shows a constant speed and uniformity the entire length. Weld is smooth and ripples are evenly spaced.
Proficient

Weld shows a constant speed with some blemishes that are minimal. Some of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples.
Emerging

Weld shows definite areas of speeding up and slowing down. Ripples tend to be coarse. Most of the weld is rough and has uneven ripples.
Beginning

Weld has been done to fast or to slow. Weld is not complete, ripples uneven and rough.
Penetration

Complete without burn through

Advanced

Weld bead has sufficient buildup, and noburn through
Proficient

Shows evidence of good penetration in most of the weld.
Emerging

Shows evidence of no penetration in some of the weld.
Beginning

Filler metal is on top of base metal, or burn through an bottom of base metal. Hole(s) in base metal.
Beginning and Ending

Crater well filled

Advanced

End of each weld is complete, the line doesn't taper off.
Proficient

Weld ending is full but shows some tapering and a craterpresent
Emerging

Crater distinctly present at the end of the bead.
Beginning

Metal is burned through at the end.
