Powered by iRubric The "Right" Height
Standard: MAFS.9.12.G-SRT.2.5. Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and prove relationships in geometric figures.
Objective: In a group of three, given a real world task in an outdoor setting, students will be able to determine the length or height of a physical object using geometric theories for similarity and congruency of right triangles.
  Missing

Weak attempt or failure to attempt.
0-3 points

3 pts

Novice

Many errors, unorganized and does not show understanding of the concept.
4-6 points

6 pts

Basic

Organized and shows understanding of the concept, but with errors.
7-9 points

9 pts

Proficient

Some errors, but organized and shows understanding of the concept.
10-12 points

12 pts

Excellent

Very neat, organized, and shows mastery of the concept with no errors.
13-15 points

15 pts

Mathematical Computations
15 pts

Determine the correct height of the flagpole. Grading criteria for diverse learners will be adjusted IAW their accommodations and IEP.

Missing

Did not attempt to perform any mathematical computations.
Novice

Height of flagpole was incorrect due to many computational errors.
Basic

Height of flagpole was determined in the lower estimated range due to computational errors.
Proficient

Height of the flagpole was in the estimated range with some computational errors.
Excellent

Height of the flagpole was determined correctly with no errors.
Proportional Reasoning
15 pts

The ability to think critically and recognize the relationship between two quantities. Grading criteria for diverse learners will be adjusted IAW their accommodations and IEP.

Missing

Did not attempt to develop a proportion between two similar figures.
Novice

Attempted to develop proportion between two similar figures, but failed in understanding the concept.
Basic

Developed and recognized half of the proportion between similar figures correctly, but made significant errors on the other half.
Proficient

Developed a proportion correctly, but not for the correct side of the similar figure.
Excellent

The proportion between similar figures was developed correctly.
Measurement Data
15 pts

Perform measurements using the standard Imperial system. ELL students will not be penalized if the metric system was used. Grading criteria for diverse learners will be adjusted IAW their accommodations and IEP.

Missing

Did not measure shadows.
Novice

Measured shadows incorrectly and failed to make minor conversions.
Basic

Measured shadows correctly, but failed to make minor conversions.
Proficient

Measured shadows correctly and had minor conversion errors.
Excellent

Measured shadows and converted correctly with no errors.
Similar Triangles
15 pts

The ability to mentally develop abstract triangles. Grading criteria for diverse learners will be adjusted IAW their accommodations and IEP.

Missing

Did not attempt to develop abstract similar triangles from shadows and physical objects.
Novice

Attempted to develop abstract similar triangles from shadows and physical objects, but failed to understand the geometric theories for congruency and similarity.
Basic

Developed abstract similar triangles from shadows and physical objects, but made several errors in congruency and similarity.
Proficient

Developed abstract similar triangles from shadows and physical objects, but made some errors in congruency and similarity.
Excellent

Developed abstract similar triangles from shadows and physical objects with no errors.
Drawing/ Sketch
15 pts

ELL students will be able to show their work and use a comfortable level of English. Grading criteria for diverse learners will be adjusted IAW their accommodation and IEP.

Missing

Not present.
Novice

Sketch is present but unorganized, barely legible, and does not correctly depict the method for determining height of an object using "shadow reckoning."
Basic

Sketch is present with some organization, mostly legible and depicts the similar triangles with measurements using "shadow reckoning," but with several errors.
Proficient

Sketch is neat, organized and mostly depicts the similar triangles with measurements using "shadow reckoning," but with some errors.
Excellent

Sketch is neat, organized and correctly depicts the similar triangles with measurements using "shadow reckoning" without errors.
Group
The ability to function and participate in a group environment.
Group Dynamics
15 pts

The ability to work in a group to achieve a common goal.

Missing

Worked individually and did not collaborate with the group.
Novice

Minimal group collaboration was performed. Mostly worked individually. Issues could not be solved collectively.
Basic

Occasionally collaborated with the group to determine the solution to the problem. Issues were solved as a group but needed heavy mediation from the instructor.
Proficient

Mostly worked as a group to determine the solution to the problem. Most issues were solved collectively with little mediation from the instructor.
Excellent

Worked collectively as a group to determine the solution to the problem. Issues were solved as a group to determine the best outcome.
