General Requirements

Did the student use watercolors while filling the entire picture plane?

Advanced

The student created a landscape painting using watercolors and extended the landscape scene outside of the picture plane.
Proficient

The student created a landscape painting using watercolors and filled the entire picture plane.
Basic

The student created a landscape painting which fills most of the picture plane. Watercolors were used but in some areas the pencil drawing is still noticeable underneath.
Below Basic

The student did not fill the picture plane. The landscape is drawn with pencil and little or no watercolor is present within the drawing.
Accuracy of Landscape

Did the student create a foreground, middle ground, and background within their painting? Is the horizon line properly employed and are trees proportional and reflected in the water scenes?

Advanced

The landscape is clearly drawn with a foreground and background. Excellent attention has been given to the horizon line and trees. Sky colors and trees are accurately and realistically reflected in the water.
Proficient

The landscape is clearly drawn with a foreground and background. Good attention has been given to the horizon line and trees. All sky colors and trees are present in the reflection of the water.
Basic

The landscape is drawn with a foreground and background. Some attention has been given to the horizon line and trees. Some sky colors and trees are present in the reflection of the water.
Below Basic

The landscape is drawn with little distinction between foreground and background. There is no attempt to create a horizon line or mirror the colors of the sky or the trees with the reflection in the water.
Watercolors

Did the student use various watercolor techniques within their painting such as washes in the background and more detailed application in the foreground? Were colors applied consistently and evenly?

Advanced

Watercolors were applied in a neat and creative manner. Colors were evenly and consistently applied (there are no "blotchy" dark or light areas). Washes were used in the background. Brighter colors were used with more detail in the foreground.
Proficient

The application of the watercolor is fairly neat and creative, however, there may be a few areas that need some work (some colors may need to be more evenly and/or consistently applied). The student used washes in the background and attempted to add detail to the foreground.
Basic

The application of the watercolor is not very neat or creative. Many areas are lacking and/or incomplete. The student used only washes throughout the entire piece.
Below Basic

The application of the watercolor was not done in a neat or creative manner. The watercolor looks sloppy, as though no effort was put into the project.
