Landscape Drawing 
Students will create a landscape using various soft pastel techniques to create textures for the different landscape elements. The landscape should display three distinct grounds: Background, Middle Ground, and Foreground.

Techniques

Student used various techniques to create details and textures of the landscape scene and problem solved to select the best techniques for each part of the landscape.

Exceptional

Excellent use of soft pastel application and techniques. Strong evidence of problem solving to find the best technique for each part of the landscape.
Proficient

Good application of soft pastel techniques. Evidence of problem solving can be seen in most areas of the landscape.
Needs Work

A couple different techniques were used, but not much problem solving can be seen.
Poor

Hard to distinguish techniques used throughout the drawing and no problem solving to create details and textures can be seen.
Color

Student used knowledge of color mixing to create the different colors of their background.

Exceptional

Excellent knowledge and use of color mixing throughout entire drawing. Colors are blended when needed.
Proficient

Good use of color mixing throughout most of the drawing. Some color blending is visible.
Needs Work

Some knowledge of color mixing can be seen in parts of the drawing. Limited color blending is visible.

Use of color theory/mixing is not evident in the drawing. Didn't attempt to mix colors to create new colors or match the inspiration photo.

Excellent textures, patterns, highlights and shadows throughout entire drawing make landscape seem realistic. Each ground is easily identified.
Proficient

Student used textures, patterns, highlights and shadows in the landscape to make the landscape realistic. All three grounds can be identified.
Needs Work

Student used very few textures, patterns, highlights and shadows where necessary to make the landscape seem realistic and identifiable. Hard to separate the three grounds.
Poor

Student used little textures, patterns, highlights and shadows and not enough to make the painting appear realistic or the three grounds identifiable.
Effort/Time Usage

Student was able to show care for their drawing and used time wisely.

Exceptional

The student put forth extraordinary effort to complete the project well as possible; used class time extremely well. Appears balanced and fully complete.
Proficient

The student put forth the effort required to finish the project; used class time adequately. Appears complete.
Needs Work

The student put forth the effort required to finish the project; used class time adequately. Some areas seem incomplete.
Poor

The student put forth no effort or the project was not completed; class time was not used well. Unfinished.
