Only 1-2 students were involved in the discussion. Topic was rarely about the text.
Fair

A few students touched on the book. There was some occasional talk about the text, but often veered off into non-related subjects.
Good

Most of the students were involved in the discussion. The talk centered mostly around the text, while occasionally getting off track.
Excellent

All students contributed ideas, asked questions and shared their thoughts. There was a deep rich discussion that enhanced understanding of the text.
Knowledge of content

Poor

There was very little evidence to show that students read the text and were able to speak on it.
Fair

A couple of students read the text, and were heavily relied upon to bring the others up to speed.
Good

Most students were able to demonstrate that they read the text. 1-2 students needed to be told what had been read.
Excellent

Everyone clearly read the text as evidenced by their offerings in the discussion. When questions were asked, they were based on information that had been read beforehand.
Interaction with Others

Poor

Tone was frequently disrespectful. Students spoke over each other and/or dismissed differences of opinion.
Fair

There was some disrespect throughout the discussion. A few ideas were heard, but differences of opinion tended presented in an argumentative way. Students were only occasionally able to speak without interruption.
Good

A good tone of respect was set. There were occasional arguments, but overall a productive discussion. Most of the time students spoke uninterrupted.
Excellent

An excellent tone of courtesy and respect was maintained.
Differences of opinion were heard and considered. Points of view were restated to check for understanding. No one was interrupted.
Quality of Conversation

Poor

Low level discussion, with only closed-ended questions. (Factual, yes or no only). Opinion and deeper analysis of the text was not offered .
Fair

A few open-ended questions were posed that led to some discussion, but students mostly restated facts from the book and little else.
Good

More open-ended questions were presented which helped spark a discussion. Closed-ended questions were occasionally asked for clarity. There may have been references to other texts for comparison.
Excellent

There was a great deal of analysis and deeper opinions were offered. The majority of the questions were open-ended and led to new ideas. Closed-ended questions were used to help clear up confusion and led to bigger ideas.
Teamwork

Poor

There was little to no evidence of collaboration in this discussion.
Fair

There was evidence of some collaboration with 2 students, but there's room for improvement.
Good

There was evidence of teamwork and collaboration. It was clear that students supported each other in this task.
Excellent

This was a group effort in every sense of the word. Everyone clearly contributed and supported each other. The teamwork was evident as everyone rose to the occasion.
