Breath Support/Control; Phrasing	Superior Student is breathing properly and supporting the tone. Student breathes between designated phrases.	Proficient Student is usually breathing properly, but occasionally does not support the tone to the end of phrases. Student usually breathes in the correct places.	Basic Student sometimes breathes properly and only occasionally supports the tone to the end of the phrases. Student sometimes breathes in the correct places.	Needs Improvement Student rarely breathes properly. Performance lacks breath support of the tone. Student often breathes in the middle of phrases.
Rhythmic Accuracy	Superior Virtually no errors. All rhythms are accurately performed. Maintains a steady tempo throughout. Student is able to stay with the accompaniment throughout the piece.	Proficient Rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few incorrect rhythms. Maintains a steady tempo through most of the piece. Student is mostly able to stay with the accompaniment but has minor issues with entrances.	Basic Some rhythms are accurate, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors. Tone Quality	Superior Tone Quality is consistently focused, clear & centered throughout the vocal range. Tone has professional quality.	Proficient Tone Quality is focused, clear & centered through most of the range. An extreme note in the range sometimes causes the quality to be uncontrolled.	Basic Tone Quality is somewhat focused, clear & centered but sometimes the tone is uncontrolled in the normal range. Occasionally the tone quality detracts from the overall performance.	Needs Improvement The tone is often unfocused, thin or pinched & seldom centered throughout most of the singing range, significantly detracting from the overall performance.
Pitch/Intonation	Superior Virtually no errors. All pitches are accurately performed and in tune.	Proficient The intonation is secure and pitches are mostly accurate. There are a few incorrect pitches or intonation errors.	Basic Intonation is somewhat inconsistent. Some pitches are accurate, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors.	Needs Improvement Performance is consistenly out of tune. Very few accurate pitches. Performance lacks solid preparation of pitch/melody.
Diction	Superior Student articulates clearly & accurately and the text is easily understood. All vowels and consonants are clearly formed. Foreign text is pronounced correctly.	Proficient Student articulates the words somewhat clearly/accurately and most of the text is understood. Most of the vowels and consonants are clearly formed, but a few final consonants are missing &/or a few vowels are incorrectly shaped. Foreign text is generally pronounced correctly.	Basic Student sometimes articulates the words, but the words of the text often lack clear beginning and ending consonant sounds. Vowel shapes are inconsistent. Foreign text has some errors. Musicianship	Superior Performs with creative interpretation of the style of music. Always uses accurate dynamic levels. Sings with expression & consistently creates a flowing line of music.	Proficient Often performs with appropriate interpretation of music. Uses most of the dynamic & expressive markings. Mostly creates a flowing line of music.	Basic Dynamic levels are inconsistent and performed with some interpretation, but not consistently. Sometimes creates a flowing line of music.	Needs Improvement Attention to dynamics is lacking from the performance. Performer rarely demonstrates expression, simply performs the notes. Rarely creates a flowing line of music.
Posture	Superior Singer maintains correct posture throughout the performance. Singer performs with poise, using a confident stance. Singer performs with appropriate facial expression throughout.	Proficient Singer usually has correct posture but at times lowers chest or slouches shoulders. Facial expressions are often appropriate.	Basic Singer sometimes uses correct posture but often appears uncomfortable or tense. Facial expressions are minimal & ineffective. Sometimes uses distracting motions.	Needs Improvement Singer has poor posture throughout the performance. Singer is tense & shifts weight. Facial expressions & motions are inappropriate &/or distracting.
Memorization	Superior Student is completely memorized, including all tempo, dynamic & expressive markings.	Proficient Student is mostly memorized, including text, pitches & rhythms. Some expression marking, dynamics...are memorized.	Basic Student is somewhat memorized but has lapses in text, pitch &/or rhythm. Expressive markings are not memorized.	Needs Improvement Student has only small portions memorized.
