Art students should be able to successfully critique their own artwork and that of others using terminology that is understandable and relevant to students in Art 3.

Critique of a Work of Art
	Excellent 100 pts	Above Average 90 pts	Average 80 pts	Below Average 70 pts
Description	Excellent Makes a complete and detailed description of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	Above Average Makes a detailed description of most of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	Average Makes a detailed description of some of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	Below Average Descriptions are not detailed or complete.
Interpretation	Excellent Forms a somewhat reasonable hypothesis about the symbolic or metaphorical meaning and is able to support this with evidence from the work.	Above Average Student identifies the literal meaning of the work.	Average Student can relate how the work makes him/her feel personally.	Below Average Student finds it difficult to interpret the meaning of the work.
Evaluation	Excellent Uses multiple criteria to judge the artwork, such as composition, expression, creativity, design, communication of ideas.	Above Average Uses 1-2 criteria to judge the artwork	Average Tries to use aesthetic criteria to judge artwork, but does not apply the criteria accurately.	Below Average Evaluates work as good or bad based on personal taste.
Analysis of artwork	Excellent Student demonstrated understanding of design elements through the use of correct art terminology and was able to clearly describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.	Above Average The student demonstrated some awareness of basic design elements and was able to describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.	Average The student demonstrated satisfactory awareness of the design elements and briefly described, discussed, and interpreted artwork.	Below Average The student demonstrated very little awareness of basic design elements and made no effort to describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.
