Kindergarten Reading Assessment
	Emergent 1 pts	Beginning 2 pts	Satisfactory 3 pts	Above Average 4 pts	Superior 5 pts
Phonics	Emergent Student is able to identify some consonant sounds.	Beginning Student identifies consonant sounds and then matches sounds to letters.	Satisfactory Student sounds out some CVC words.	Above Average Student decodes words while reading.	Superior Student decodes challenging words and is able to divide words into syllables.
Word Recognition	Emergent Student recognizes up to 5 high-frequency words, but cannot yet write these words.	Beginning Student reads 5-10 high-frequency words. They may write several of these words correctly.	Satisfactory Student reads and writes 10-20 high-frequency words.	Above Average Student reads and writes all 24 common kindergarten words.	Superior Student reads and writes more than the 24 common, high-frequency kindergarten words.
Comprehension	Emergent Student ocassionaly makes one of the three connections between the text and their background knowledge.	Beginning Student consistently makes text-to-self connections while reading.	Satisfactory Student makes text-to-self connections and sometimes makes text-to-world connections while reading.	Above Average Student makes text-to-self and text-to-world connections and may make text-to-text connections while reading.	Superior Student consistently makes all three types of connections while reading: text-to-self, text-to-world, and text-to-text connections.
