Surreal Watercolor

Students will accomplish A.1, AI.3, AI.6, AI.7, AI.8, AII.1, AII.3, AII.5, AII.7, AIII.1, AIII.3, AIII.6, AIII.7, and AIII.8 by creating sketches for their watercolor, choosing a sketch, and creating a watercolor painting. Each area is worth 20 points.

Design/Composition	Excellent Student applies design principles with great skill. Student has a good sense of space and utilizes composition rules taught.	Above Average Student applies design principles with fair skill. Some composition rules were used and space relationships between objects are well done.	Average Student tries to apply design principles but the overall result is not pleasing.	Below Average Student does not appear to be able to apply most design principles to their work.
Painting	Excellent Painting is expressive and detailed. Shapes, patterns, rendering and/or texture are used to add interest to the piece.	Above Average Painting is expressive and somewhat detailed. Little use has been made of pattern, rendering, or texture.	Average Painting has few details. It is primarily representational with very little use of pattern, rendering, or texture.	Below Average Painting lacks almost all detail or it is unclear what the painting is intended to be.
Color	Excellent Choice and application of color shows an advanced knowledge of color relationships. Color choice enhances the idea being expressed.	Above Average Choice and application of color shows knowledge of color relationships. Colors are appropriate for the idea being expressed.	Average Choice and application of color shows some knowledge of color relationships. Colors are however, not appropriate for the idea being expressed.	Below Average Students needs to work on learning color relationships and applying that knowledge to work.
Use of materials	Excellent Student shows obvious understanding of how to apply the medium and make different applications work together. There are several watercolor techniques displayed.	Above Average Student applies medium in a skilled manner, but a few areas are problematic but not distracting to the overall appeal of the work. Not many if any experimental techniques used.	Average Student applies the medium, but has trouble transitioning from one application to another. There are several areas that distract from the overall appeal of the work.	Below Average Student misuses materials and does not apply the medium with any skill. Much of the work contains areas that are distracting to the viewer.
Surrealism	Excellent Student has taken the technique being studied and applied it in a way that is their own. The student's style comes through. There is a clear use of one or more of the surrealist techniques.	Above Average Student has taken the technique and created a very original piece of work. Student's idea comes through successfully in places. Surreal principles considered.	Average Student has created an fairly original piece of work but Surreal principles are not clear.	Below Average Surreal idea is not evident. None of the surreal methods were applied in the idea.
