St. Tammany Parish 7th/8th Grade Intermediate Band Rubric 
This is a rubric for intermediate band students in their third or fourth year of playing. It is a general guidline for the skills they are learning. It is intended to help them understand what is expected of them.

Student plays when necessary, student always attempts to play, student does not disrupt others.
Excellent

Student only plays when necessary, student always attempts despite difficulty of the material, student does not disrupt others, students shows evidence of home practice.
Instrument

Instrument is required to participate in class.

Poor

Student has forgotten his or her instrument 2 or more times out of the week.
Fair

Student has forgotten his or her instrument 1 time out of the week.
Good

Student has had instrument every day of the week and is in acceptable playing condition.
Excellent

Student has had instrument every day of the week and is in good playing condition.
Posture

Good posture is required for proper tone.

Poor

Student slouches in chair, does not hold horn up, does not sit on the edge of the chair.
Fair

Student sometimes slouches, sometimes does not hold their horn up, sometimes sits on the edge of the chair.
Good

Student displays proper posture by sitting up and holds his or her horn the proper way.
Excellent

Student displays proper posture by sitting up, sitting on the edge of his or her chair, and holds his or her horn the proper way.
Rhythm/Rest /Steady tempo

Proper rhythm reading & steady tempo are critical for a good musical performance.

Poor

Student had no correct rhythms or rests/was not playing with a steady rhythm.
Fair

Student had some correct rhythms or rests/had a somewhat steady tempo.
Good

Student had mostly correct rhythms or rests /mostly kept a steady tempo.
Excellent

Student has consistently correct rhythms or rests /consistently keeps a steady tempo.
Tone Quality/Intonation

Producing a good tone (appropriate to playing level) is important for proper intonation.

Poor

Student does not play with good tone quality(good sound) or intonation.
Fair

Student played some of the song with good tone quality(good sound) & intonation.
Good

Student played most of the song with good tone quality(good sound) & good intonation.
Excellent

Student played all of the song with good tone quality(good sound) & had excellent intonation.
