Comprehension Assessment (Fiction)

Using the areas of comprehension identified in Literacy for the 21st Century (Tompkins, chapter 9), this rubric is to assess student comprehension of a fictional text using a 5-point scale. Points 1, 3, and 5 have criterion listed; columns 2 and 4 are for "gray areas" that may be the average of two columns. Rubric is worth 25 points.

Comprehension Assessment
	Limited Demonstrates limited comprehension of the story. 1 pts	2 pts	Satisfactory Demonstrates partial comprehension of the story. 3 pts	4 pts	Excellent Demonstrates detailed comprehension of the story. 5 pts
Plot - Conflict/Resolution	Limited Student cannot recall the problem in the story or the resolution. The student cannot recall the story's beginning, middle, or end.	2	Satisfactory Student recalls 2-3 details about the story: such as character's goal, the problem/conflict, events within the story, and the resolution. Student's retelling includes parts of the beginning, middle, and end (but not all three).	4	Excellent Student recalls 5+ details about the story: such as character's goal, the problem/conflict, events within the story, and the resolution. The student's retelling includes a beginning, middle, and end.
Character	Limited Student identifies little to nothing about the appearance of the character. Student does not identify any actions by the character. Student does not explain how the character's speech affects the character.	2	Satisfactory Student gives a brief description (1-3 details) of the character's appearance. Student explains the character's actions in the story (gives 1-2 examples). Student identifies the character's speech, but does not explain how it affects the character.	4	Excellent Student gives a detailed description of the character's appearance. Student explains the character's actions in the story (gives 3+ examples), and how that affects the character's personality. Student explains how the character's speech affects the character.
