Journal Entries and Explanation

Requirements include daily entries that each will be 5 participation points with an assessment grade randomly chosen from one entry a week. Each journal entry will be a minimum of 2 paragraphs of 5 sentences each. There will be a question posed each day and a week summation on Fridays where the students will be asked one different question each day and will be asked to appropriately and effectively answer each question.

Exemplary

Selected entry addresses the posed question and answers it while addressing strengths and weaknesses as well as progress up to this point. This is completion and good effort of answering the question asked by the teacher.
Proficient

The entry answers the question for the most part while mostly addressing strengths and weaknesses as well as at least stating their own progress in the class to this point.
Partially Proficient

The question asked by the teacher is only partially answered by the student and strengths and weaknesses are either not stated or only partially stated.
Incomplete

The question asked by the teacher is not answered or stated by the student. They did not follow the directions and did not state their own strengths and weaknesses.
Written Communication

To demonstrate growth and to improve in writing skills while giving appropriate effort.

Exemplary

The student shows the ability to grow and show improvement and strength in writing. This includes fully answer the question and expressing his or herself very well and appropriately.
Proficient

The student shows the ability for the most part to show improvement and some strength in written expression. This includes mostly thinking about and answering the posed question while expressing his or herself decently.
Partially Proficient

The student shows some ability to improve but needs to work on their writing skills and expression to improve within the course and journal entries.
Incomplete

The student is not showing improvement through journal entries. Needs to work on writing skills and expression to improve in the eJournal. Also needs to work on answering the question asked by the teacher.
Student Learning and Creativity

The goal of this is to demonstrate student learning and creativity. Journal entries need to demonstrate that the students are learning in academic areas.

Exemplary

The student is showing the ability to learn and creatively express his/her self while answering the questions asked by the teacher. Did an excellent job showing learning through journal entries.
Proficient

The student is showing the ability to learn and creatively express his/her self for the most part. Did a good job showing learning through journal entries.
Partially Proficient

The student is showing some ability to learn and creatively express his/her self. Needs to improve on showing learning and growth through journal entries and answer the question asked by the teacher more effectively.
Incomplete

The student is not showing the ability to learn or very much creativity through journal entries. Needs to work on answering the questions asked by the teacher more effectively while showing more effort.
Emotional Expression

This is a journal where the students need to express their emotions. As long as they express their feelings openly and appropriately this is what this category is looking for.

Exemplary

The student is showing the ability to appropriately express his/her self emotionally through the journal entries. A good deal of the questions asked by the teacher will ask the students how they feel about something. The student did an excellent job answering these questions and expressing their emotions.
Proficient

The student is showing some ability to appropriately express his/her self emotionally through the journal entries. A good deal of the questions asked by the teacher will ask the students how they feel about something. The student did a good job answering these questions and expressing their emotions.
Partially Proficient

The student is not completely showing the ability to appropriately express his/her self emotionally through the journal entries. A good deal of the questions asked by the teacher will ask the students how they feel about something. The student needs to improve at answering these questions and expressing their emotions.
Incomplete

The student is not appropriately or effectively expressing his/her self emotionally through the journal entries. A good deal of the questions asked by the teacher will ask the students how they feel about something. The student needs to improve at effort and needs to work on recognizing emotions and how to write these down in journal entries.
Writing Mechanics

Includes Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar and Capitalization and expanding sentences to a minimum of 8-10 words to get full credit.

Exemplary

There are no errors or very few errors with all of the sentences being at least 8-10 words in length.
Proficient

There are two to four errors which require minor revisions. Clarity and flow is not affected or very minorly affected. The student had sentences of the appropriate length for the most part.
Partially Proficient

There are five or more errors which require revision. Clarity and flow may be affected, and the student needs to work on putting periods and commas in the correct place as well as writing sentences of at least 8-10 words.
Incomplete

Major revision is necessary because of the number and/or type of errors. Clarity and flow is affected and the sentences were not the correct length and were too short. The student needs to work on sentence length and putting commas and periods in the correct place as well as other errors.
Coping Skills and Effort

This section deals with effort and coping skills. Effort is simply completing the assignment to the best of their ability and compared with previous journal entries. Coping skills deals with their own recognization of what bothers them and being able to discuss it in selected journal entries.

Exemplary

The student showed the ability to cope when upset and put forth great effort on the journal entry.
Proficient

The student showed the ability for the most part to cope when upset and continue working and put forth good effort on the journal entry.
Partially Proficient

The student needs to show improvement on coping skills when upset and needs to show improvement in effort on journal entry.
Incomplete

The student needs to improve on coping skills and effort given on journal entry. The student did not show necessary effort and needs put more effort forth on future journal entries.
Noticing Strengths and Weaknesses

There is a section at the end of at least one sentence for the students to write about one strength and one weakness daily. This is a good way for the students to recognize what they are doing well and what they need to work on more or need more help with. Accurately being able to notice their own strengths and weaknesses is really the key here.

Exemplary

The student showed great ability to notice his/her strengths and weaknesses and listed at least 1 of each on the selected journal entry.
Proficient

The student showed good ability to notice his/her strengths and weaknesses and listed at least part of 1 of each on the selected journal entry.
Partially Proficient

The student needs to improve on noticing his/her strengths and weaknesses. Only listed one strength or one weakness on the journal entry not both.
Incomplete

The student needs to improve on noticing his/her strengths and weaknesses. Did not state these at all in the journal entry.
Use of Vocabulary

Includes use of known vocabulary words appropriately while showing the use of expanding their vocabulary with new words. One new vocabulary word is required to be used in one new entry each week not daily.

Exemplary

The student showed the ability to learn and use new and existing vocabulary in the journal entry. Showed development and expanding of his/her vocabulary.
Proficient

The student showed some ability to learn and use new and existing vocabulary in the journal entry. Showed some development and expanding of his/her vocabulary.
Partially Proficient

The student needs to work on vocabulary use and development. Did not use a new vocabulary word and didn't appropriately use existing words in journal entry.
Incomplete

No new vocabulary used and existing vocabulary was not used effectively at all. The student needs to improve on vocabulary use and learning new vocabulary words.
