3rd Grade SLT Assessment Rubric 
This rubric will be used to assess 3rd grade students on a variety of skills, including: beat, rhythm, pitch matching, melodic call/response, vocal tone and singers posture.

Student demonstrates an improvised rhythm with some hesitation

Student performs an improvised rhythm with confidence
Rhythm Echo Clapping

Assesses the student's ability to listen and accurately repeat rhythms demonstrated by the teacher

Student is unable to repeat a rhythm pattern

Student is able to accurately echo a rhythm pattern some of the time

Student is able to accurately echo a rhythm pattern most of the time

Student can accurately echo any rhythm with precision
Pitch

Assesses the student's ability to match pitch using G-E (minor 3rd -- Sol-Mi)

Poor

Student displays no sense of pitch, and frequently has difficulty singing on pitch.
Needs Improvement

Student rarely displays a sense of pitch, and rarely sings on pitch.
Good

Student sometimes displays a sense of pitch, and is sometimes able to sing on pitch.
Excellent

Student consistently displays a good sense of pitch, being able to sing on pitch and discern when he/she is not.
Melodic Echo

Assesses the student's ability to echo sing short phrases using La, Sol and Mi

Poor

Student displays no sense of pitch, and frequently has difficulty singing on pitch.
Needs Improvement

Student rarely displays a sense of pitch, and rarely sings on pitch.
Good

Student sometimes displays a sense of pitch, and is sometimes able to sing on pitch.
Excellent

Student consistently displays a good sense of pitch, being able to sing on pitch and discern when he/she is not.
Tone Quality

Assesses the student's ability to produce clear, beautiful tone while singing

Poor

Student makes no effort to focus tone or correct tone control issues.
Needs Improvement

The tone is often not clear, focused, or controlled in the normal singing range
Good

Tone quality is often clear and focused, but sometimes uncontrolled in the normal singing range.
Excellent

Tone quality is consistently clear throughout the range of the voice <BR>

Singing Posture

Assesses the student's ability to demonstrate correct breathing habits while singing

Student never sits/stands with correct posture.

Student often needs reminders to sit/stand with correct posture.

Student sometimes needs reminders to sit/stand with correct singing posture.

Student always sits/stands with correct singing posture.
Vocal Production

Assesses the student's ability to produce tall open vowel sounds while singing

Poor

Mouth is barely open, not allowing for a full round sound.
Needs Improvement

Mouth is a collapse oval, and is not open enough to produce proper tone quality.
Good

Mouth has a moderate, round opening with a somewhat raised tongue.
Excellent

Mouth is a tall, relaxed oval (2 fingers high) with a relaxed tongue.
Breath Support/Phrasing

Assesses the student's ability to demonstrate correct, supported breathing habits while singing

Poor

Student's singing lacks the energy and support required to sustain a phrase.
Needs Improvement

Student often lifts shoulders when breathing, and breathes in the middle of words. There is little support of the tone.
Good

Breath is in the chest without an expanded rib cage and does not fully support the tone. There is some shoulder movement.
Excellent

Student is breathing properly with diaphragm support and expanded rib cage. Breath is supported, and at breath marks.
