Rhythm and Tempo Accuracy	Below Expectations No evidence of steady pulse	Level 1 Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.	Level 2 Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.	Level 3 Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.	Level 4 Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.
Pitch Accuracy	Below Expectations No recognizable tune is present.	Level 1 Many notes are incorrect - student seems unfamiliar with the tune.	Level 2 Shows a good feel for the notes, but there are repeated mistakes in pitch. Intonation has not developed appropriately.	Level 3 Mostly correct with a few errors. There may be small intonation problems.	Level 4 Pitches are correct and intonation has a characteristic quality sound in all registers.
Tone Quality	Below Expectations Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure/grip and/or no breath support. Musicality	Below Expectations Student Does not give attention to dynamics, articulation, phrasing or style indications.	Level 1 Rarely uses dynamics, articulations, phrasing & style indications.	Level 2 Use of dynamics, articulations & phrasing are narrow and playing is inconsistent in style.	Level 3 Student displays ability to play with correct dynamics, articulations, phrasing & style with minor errors.	Level 4 Student consistently plays with beautiful attention to the dynamics, articulations, musical phrasing & style.
Overall Preparation	Below Expectations Student is not prepared	Level 1 Student has prepared less than half of the test piece. The more basic phrases are performed with some errors but the more technically challenging sections are not attempted or easily recognizable.	Level 2 Student performs the less technically demanding moments fairly well but the more challenging moments reveal a lack of preparation and/or technical ablility.	Level 3 Student performs most of the material accurately but more technically demanding phrases are audibly strained and flaws are present. Preparation is good but still needs some rehearsal.	Level 4 Student performs all musical elements with control and fluidity. Excellent preparation is evident throughout.
