1. Units of force identified Students need to understand that the missing number of units is 500 units.	Poor Student failed to identify the correct units of force.	Fair	Excellent Student correctly identified the missing units as 500 units.
1. Explanation Students should understand that the missing number of units have to be 500 units because the cart is not moving and, therefore, the forces are balanced.	Poor Student provides no explanation for their chosen number of units.	Fair Student provides some explanation for their chosen number of units but explanation contains errors. Does not include the word balanced.	Excellent Student correctly states that the number of units must equal 500 units because, in order for the cart not to move the forces must be balanced.
2. Labeling the apple picture Students should correctly identify upward force as applied by the hand and downward force as applied by gravity.	Poor Students do not identify any of the forces at work.	Fair Students identify upward force as applied by the hand or downward force as applied by gravity but not both.	Excellent Students understand that there is a downward force applied on the apple from gravity and an upward force applied on the apple from the hand.
2. Explain why the apple is not moving Students should be able to state that the apple is not moving because the two forces applied to the apple are balanced.	Poor Students give no explanation or explanation is off topic.	Fair Students state that the apple is not moving because of the forces but doesn't understand that it is because the forces are balanced.	Excellent Student is able to state that the apple is not moving because the forces applied to the apple are balanced.
