TONE QUALITY Fundamental characteristic tone quality	Level 4 Uses proper finger placement, speed, and weight appropriate for musical selection and demonstrates advanced techniques to play expressively.	Level 3 Uses propre finger placement, speed, and weight appropriate for musical selection.	Level 2 Generally uses proper finger placement, speed, and weight.	Level 1 Begins to understand finger placement, speed, and weight.
Posture Good Posture and Hand Position	Level 4 Sits with erect posture, arms, away from body, feet flat on the floor and fingers positioned perpendicular to neck.	Level 3 Sits slightly hunched over, arms tight, feet on the floor, back straight but leaning on the chair. fingers diagonal to neck.	Level 2 Sits hunched over with arms lowered but not resting on the body. Thumb beyond mid-neck and fingers flat.	Level 1 Sits with head sown, shoulders slumped, arms resting on body, left hand cupped around neck, fingers flat on strings.
RHYTHMIC ACCURACY Reads and performs rhythms accurately	Level 4 Plays all rhythms with precision and fluency in a proper steady tempo.	Level 3 Plays all rhythms accurately in a steady tempo.	Level 2 Plays most rhythms accurately, varying tempo when necessary to accommodate unfamiliar sections. POSITIONS Placement of fingers on the fretboard	Level 4 Shifts from one note to another in a relaxed, fluid manner using creative fingerings to accommodate passages.	Level 3 Shifts from one note to another accurately with a relaxed, fluid motion.	Level 2 Shifts from one note to another with a somewhat fluid motion and accuracy level.	Level 1 Understands concept of shifting and is working toward accuracy and fluidity.
CHORDS Fingering and strumming multiple strings	Level 4 Plays all chords with precision and fluency in a proper, steady tempo, demonstrates advanced technique in transportation from chord to chord.	Level 3 Plays all chords accurately in a steady tempo.	Level 2 Plays most chords accurately, varying tempo when necessary to accommodate unfamiliar chord transportation.
