Cosmetology Work Sample Students will work with a manekin head and several tools to display their skill in basic tasks of a cosmetologist.
	Poor You completed the task with assistance and/or prompting with inconsistent quality. You performed the task with several errors evident in technique. You described the technique with vague understanding. 1 pts	Fair You completed the task alone and approaching the industry standard. You performed the task with occassional errors evident in the technique. You described the technique with prompting. 2 pts	Good You completed the task alone with few reminders. You performed the task with very few errors evident in technique. You communicated and reflected upon the technique to others. You completed the entire procedure in accordance with required timing. 3 pts	Excellent Industry standard: You have provided and conducted cosmetology services in a safe environment, free from disease, followed all rules and regulations set by TDLR, followed all rules of law, followed instructors and all manufacturers directions when applying chemicals to the hair. You are now ready to take the Mock State Board Examination. 4 pts
Pre-Exam Setup & Disfection 7 pts Student follows directions and stays on task.	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete the initial sanitation and setup procedures. This includes Draping, Scienctific Brushing and scalp analysis, seating of client, removal of products from containers, sanitizing work station and hands before performing any service on a client.	Fair Student needed several reminders to complete the initial sanitation and setup. Student draped and seated client properly.	Good Student proceeded to complete the initial sanitation and setup. Making sure that drape was intact and scalp and hair analysis was performed before services.	Excellent Student was able to listen to directions and complete the initial sanitation and setup independently. All client services were performed before proceeding with next service.
Pony Tail 1 pts Student was able to execute ponytail in a smooth, centered, rubberband technique.	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete the ponytail section. Had difficulty with all of the following tasks. Was mostly unable to do the following tasks: 1. comb hair smooth 2. centering ponytail 3. loose rubberband with hair tangled in it.	Fair Student needed several reminders to complete the ponytail section. Had difficulty with 2/3 of the following tasks: 1. comb hair smooth 2. centering ponytail 3. loose rubberband	Good Student needed a few reminders to complete the ponytail section. Had ldifficulty with 1/3 of the following tasks: 1. comb hair smooth 2. centering ponytail 3. loose rubberband	Excellent Student was able to listen to directions to complete the ponytail section independently. Had no significant difficulty with any of the following tasks: 1. comb hair smooth 2. centering ponytail 3. loose rubberband
Perm Rods 19 pts Student should have 6 perm rods in the back center quadrant of the head from crown to nape. At least (6) rods. S/Board TDLR	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete the perm rod section. The majority of rods & bands are not parallel with the base of the head and most of the hair is very loose or off the rods.	Fair Student needed several reminders to complete the perm rod section. Three rods & bands are not parallel with the base of the head and some of the hair is loose or off the rods.	Good Student needed a few reminders to complete the perm rod section. All but 1 or 2 rods & bands are parallel with the base of the head and hair is very tightly wrapped on most of the rods.	Excellent Student was able to listen to directions to complete the perm rod section independently. All rods & bands are parellel with the base of the head and band is placed 1/16 of an inch from scalp & center of rod. Bands are untwisted.
Blow Dry and Marcel Curls 16 pts Student should have dried hair and placed curls in the right back quadrant. S/Board TDLR	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete the blow dry and curl section. Had difficulty with all of the following tasks. Was mostly unable to do the following tasks & gave up: 1. clip hair out of way to dry each section 2. manipulate the iron	Fair Student needed several reminders to complete the blow dry and curl section. Had difficulty with both of the following tasks but did not give up until ironing: 1. clip hair out of way to dry each section 2. manipulate the iron	Good Student performed with few reminders to complete the blow dry and curl section. Had little difficulty with tasks. 1. clip hair out of way to dry each section 2. manipulate the iron	Excellent Student was able to listen to directions to complete the blow dry and curl section independently. Had no difficulty with the following tasks and did not give up: 1. clip hair out of way to dry each section 2. manipulate the iron
Roller Placement 13 pts Student should have rollers placed in the top of head at crown on base. S/Board TDLR	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete roller placement. Had difficulty with all of the following tasks. Was mostly unable to do the following tasks: 1.locate cerown area. 2. created sub-sections equal length & width of each roller 3. hair is smooth around roller with no loose pieces when clipped on base.	Fair Student needed several reminders to complete roller placement. Had difficulty with 2/3 of the following tasks: 1. place rollers in crown area. 2. created sub-sections equal length & width of each roller 3. hair is smooth around roller with no loose pieces when clipped.	Good Student needed a few reminders to complete roller placement. Had difficulty with 1/3 of the following tasks: 1.place rollers in crown area of head. 2. created sub-sections equal length & width of each roller 3. hair is smooth around roller with no loose pieces when clipped.	Excellent Student was able to listen to directions to complete roller placement. Had no significant difficulty with any of the following tasks: 1. place rollers from largest to smallest 2. created sub-sections equal length & width of each roller 3. hair is smooth around roller with no loose pieces when clipped.
Tool Use/Motor Coordination 1 pts Student is able to multitask	Poor Student is unable to use more than one tool at a time. Continually sets tools down. Stuggles to manipulate wraps and rods when winding hair. Struggles to manipulate the round bruch and blowdryer without setting one or both tools down frequently.	Fair Student can use more than 1 tool but struggles setting tools down frequently.	Good Student uses tools satisfactorily, Uses proper hand movements. Uses tools safely.	Excellent Student was able to use tools easily while manipulating hair.
Attention to Detail 1 pts Student is detail oriented	Poor Student doesn't try or is unwilling to correct parallel roller &/or rod placement, straight sectioning lines,	Fair Student doesn't readily recognize flaws but if advised will attempt to correct.	Good Student recognizes and then independently attempts to correct flaws and without guidance.	Excellent Student recognizes and corrects the minimal flaws made--strives for excellence.
Problem Solving 1 pts Student takes initiative to problem solve	Poor Student doesn't remember to adjust manniquin head to so that work can be done easier. Doesn't rewet hair during four section activities. Allows floor to become soaked with water rather than to use additional towelsl.	Fair Student recongnizes problems but doesn't react or seek assistance.	Good Student recognizes and acts to solve problems but uses more steps than is necessary. Is willing to seek assistance.	Excellent Student recognizes, initiates and solves problems independently.
Shampooing 1 pts	Poor Student did not drape properly, rinse, condition or remove tangles from the hair porperly. Student must be supervised. No sanition and disinfection procedures followed.	Fair Removed shampoo and massaged correctly without supervision.	Good Removes tangles, shampoo, conditioner, and massaged scalp without supervision.	Excellent Student performs task at industry level, cleans and disinfects work area as required.
Manicure 19 pts	Poor Student needs a high level to complete the task and the manicure setup. No completion of sanitation steps on hands and model's hands.	Fair Sanitizes hands and removes polish from one nail only. Cuticles pushed back porperly. Applies base and top coats of polish with little error.	Good Sanitizes hands and removes polish form one nail only. Cuticle pushed back porperly. Applies base and top coat of polish. Massage performed and checks nails for traces of polish around cuticles.	Excellent Student was able to demonstrate understanding of information provided by instructor and followed all manicure steps, as-well-as all safety criteria, such as disposing of waste, kit remained closed, removed products from containers by using spatulas to avoid contamination, and used sanitized implements.
Haircutting 17 pts	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision to complete sections for haircut. Haircut difficulty with all of the following tasks and unable mostly unable to do the following tasks: Section properly, establish outer perimeter line, palms shears throughout haircut, palms razor throughout haircut.	Fair Student needed monitoring to complete sections, but was able to accomplish technique. Also, understood palm procedure.	Good Student required a few reminders to accomplish task but understood technique very well, blending of haircut was good and haircut was balanced. Sanitation steps followed.	Excellent Student was able to drape porperly, follow palm razor/scissor technique. Establishes guideline throughout entire perimeter of 360 head. Cleans and sanitizes foillowing all procedures until completed.
Mock Applications: Virgin Tint, Rel 17 pts	Poor Unable to perform task to application of chemicals	Fair Sections and clips hair in4- equal quadrants.	Good Sections in 4-quadrants. Applies even saturation of chemicals.	Excellent Sections in 4-quadrants. Applies even saturation of chemicals. Uses protective gloves and applies protective cresm around entire hairline.
Sculptured Nails/Tips/Wraps 1 pts	Poor Student needs a high level of supervision, unable to understand concept of how to apply acrylic porduct.	Fair Able to apply acrylic to nail and understands concept of nail application.	Good Performs task with little supervision from instructor and understands product consistency and application.	Excellent Student performs well without supervision and can identify nail products and their use.
